William Cochran came to Philadelphia in 1730 and stayed there intil 1732 when he along with two other men, bought 5,000 acres of land from a Barrister, [Attorney] Charles Carroll, Agent for Lord Baltimore, the Governor of Maryland. This land was located in Fredrick County Maryland, but when permanent lines were drawn between Pennsylvania and Maryland, it lay in what was known as Lancaster County but now is in Adams County, Pennsylvania. When William and his wife died they were buried in the family cemetary on their land which was known as Carrollsburg Manor, but later moved to the Cemetary of the Emmettsburg Presbyterian Church, just west of Emmettsburg Maryland, just off State Route #15 and Welty Road. The grave of William and Sarah is covered by a large slab 4" thick and 4' x 8'in length and width. Inscribed on the stone is the following:
HERE LYITH THE BODY OF WILLIAM COCHRAN WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE DECEMBER THE 18TH, 1771IN THE 78TH YEAR OF HIS AGE ALSO THE BODY OF SARAH COCHRAN THE WIFE OF WILLIAM COCHRAN WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE FEBRUARY IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD 1783 IN THE 83RD YEAR OF HER AGE. TIME WAS LIKE ME. THEY PROSPERED AND TIME SHALL BE WHAT THEY LEFT.
