John Cochran, the first of our family to settle in Ireland, came from Fernois, two miles eastward from Paisley, in Scotland. He had three sons, Hugh, John and James, His first settlement was at Griblon seven miles from Londonderry. He was there employeed in the fishery by Lord of Straban.
Hugh and James rescued their father, who was apprehended for debt, and they were forced to leave Griblon. They went then to the foot of Foughen Waters and were protected or assisted by Lord Askin, who employeed them in their former business, fishing. This was in the year of 1570, in the minority of King James the Sixth, before the English Conquest in the North of Ireland. He and his sons lived 110 years in three towns, Mayboy, Kilkeraugh and Carrikeel. Old Peter with his family, John ye man so called and Jonathon all went to New England. All the above was written by Robert Cochran, known as "Robert the Deaf" in a manuscript which in now located in the Presbyterian Historical Society, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[v06t0799.ftw]
