Our JAMES FAMILY starts with WILLIAM JAMES born bet 1639-1650 in Newport,R.I..He married SUSANNAH MARTIN ,daughter of JOSEPH MARTIN and Mary Coggeshall. they were married on Dec.10,1677.He died Oct.1697.Both William and Susannah are burried in the Gov.Coddington Cemetery on Farewell St., Newport,Rhode Island.It is said he built the stone wall that surrounds the cemetery.It stands to this date.Vandels destroyed all the grave markers in th 1990's,but Im sure there is a listing of the occupants at the Newport Historical Society. There is 1 possible earlier James ancestors,however I haven't been able to prove his relationship yet.WILLIAM JAMES ,who was expelled from Salem with Roger Williams.This one I am 99% sure is ours.I think he also is burried in the Coddington Cemetery. He arrived on the ship LYON,around 1630. WILLIAM and SUSANNAH had a son WILLIAM,born 1684 -died May 30,1743 at Newport,R.I.He was married to Mary(possibly)Webster. The marriage was between 1720-1724 in Westerly or Charlestown,R.I.They (Mary),had a son JONATHAN JAMES born 1720 at Westerly,died 1787,married 1st to MEHITABLE WEBB and 2nd to MARY(possibly) Hoxsie,who died 1832 and is burried in the James Lot # 14, deep in the woods around a quarter mile in off the West side of Gardiner Road ,in Richmond,R.I.There are about 114 graves in the cemetery,but only a dozen or so grave markers.It is South of Lot # 15,which is the Moore Cemetery,also related to our family. They had a son JONATHAN JAMES born 10-3-1785---died 3-12 1861,married to RUTH BARBER born 10-7-1785---died 8-2-1877.Both are burried in the same place,Lot # 14,Richmond,R.I. They had a son JONATHAN JAMES born 2-7-1809---died 7-14-1891,Richmond,R.I.,married JANE SHAW KING born 5-12-1818,Pocasset,Sandwich,Maine and died 6-20-1870.They are burried in the COMMON BURYING GROUND in Newport,R.I.,on Farewell Street.It is thru Jane's mother,Lydia Barlow that we trace our line back to Richard Warren and John Cooke of the "Mayflower". They had a son THOMAS JAMES born 6-25-1845 at Newport,R.I.,who married 1st ANNE M.CANNON B: 1845 --D:9-11-1892 at Newport,R.I. He married 2nd MARY O NEIL,they are burried in the Common Grounds in Newport. They(Anne) had a son JONATHAN ANTHONY JAMES,born 4-25-1888---died 5-31-1954,Newport,married ANNE WALSH 10-11-1887---died abt 1933,Newport. They had a son NORMAN VINCENT JAMES,SR. born 12-4-1917---died 9-5-1977,Clifton,New Jersey,married LORETTA SMITH,12-7-1917,Passaic,N.J.Burried Ceder Lawn Cemetery,Paterson,N.J. on Crooks Ave. They had a son ME.Im not dead yet as far as I can tell.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- _ASSISTED BY_ I have searched this family for the past 27 years,and with the help of my cousin from Newport,Mrs Constance (Troy) O'Neil,have accumulated a data bank of over 14,000+ names of direct and indirect ancestors..Some of the other names in the tree I have been assisted with are Babcock-assisted by Tanya Babcock Poirier and L.A.McGinnis.April King on the King line--Arther C.
