Notes
Copied from an origin unknown, as given to Mark James by Douglas James in January of 1997. (suspect that this was written in a newsletter of the Northwestern National Insurance Company around the time of his death)

"Death of Alfred James"

Alfred James, president of the Northwestern National Insurance Company of MIlwaukee, Wis., died at his home last Sunday morning, December 4. Although his death had been imparied for a year or more, when he left his office last Friday he was feeling as well as he had for some months. On Saturday morning, while at the telephone, he was suddenly seized with violent pains and returned to bed, his death following the next day.

The following story of his, as it appears in the "Cyclopedia of Insurance" is interesting.

Alfred James, president of the Northwester National Insurance Company of MIlwaukee was born at Johnstone, Scotland, but at an early age was brought to America, living at North Adams, Mass.. Mr. James's first experience with the world was unique among men who have become fire insurance managers. He was a sailor min. year from 1846 to 1856 and at the time he retired from that vocation he was first officer of the clipper ship Oxendridge. He was also a clerk in a wholesale New York grocery house two years. His introduction to fire underwriting was as clerk in a Chicago agency in 1856. From 1860 to 1871 he was himself an agent representing many companies, among them the Northwestern National paid in full and another company, the Lorillard, ninety-six cents on the dollar. In 1875, while manager of the Chicago branch office of the Northwestern, he was called to Milwaukee to take charge of the company, with the rank of vice-president. In 1887, on the death of Mr. Alexander Mitchell, he was elected president.
He was seventy-three years of age and until the last was active in business. AS an underwriter he held a unique position refusing to enter into any form of association with other companies and antagonizing such organization in defatigably. He was especially hostile to the Western Union and alwasy ready to criticize its action.
In spite of this Ishmaelitiah trait of character, Mr. James was recognized as an able underwriter, the success and growth of his company being a monument to his genius. It might be said that it grew in strength and stature in spite of this adverse position towards its competitors.
He is survived by a widow and two children, Alfred F. second vice-president of the Northwestern National Insurance Company and Miss Venice. He was a brother of Fred S. James, head fo the firm Fred S. James & Co., Chicago.
The funeral was held at the family residence on Wednesday morning. A number of insurance men of Chicago attended, going to Milwaukee in a special car. A.F. James, the son, who was on his way from Cuba to New York, received the news of the death Monday afternoon and started at once for home.
It is believed that the antagonistile position of the company was more a matter of personal feeling on the part of its president and that it will not continue to maintain such strong opposition. It is expected the Vice-President Patton, who has been with the company for thirty years, will become its president.
(dated December 8, 1904)
