Tonya spent the first five years of her life living near Danbury, in the northern part of Stokes County, NC. She lived with her parents and infant brother, Tony, on the same farm land her father had grown up on. The family moved to the Dillard community of Stokes when she was five; her parents continuing to live there on land her mother inherited from her parents.
Tonya always enjoyed art, graduated from Greensboro College with a BFA in painting and later received her teaching credentials from UNC-Greensboro. She has taught all grades and levels of art for several years.
She met husband Bill while working as a paralegal for a large law firm in downtown Winston Salem. The couple married in 1986 and have three children.
Tonya teaches art at Northwest Elementary school in Davidson County, NC.
