Republican in politics: member city council from the fo urth ward, 1878 and 1879, was in the army, Company D, 24 th Iowa Regimen t; member of the Congregational Church; member of the Legion of Honor of I owa City. He is one of the enterprising citizens of Iowa City . He is t he builder of the Jayne patent combination truss arch bridge. His sh op is on Gilbert Street . William Jayne eldest son of James and only son of James and Barbara (Wilso n) Jayne) was born September 11 1797 in Washington County, Virginia died F ebruary 25 1883 in Lee County Virginia He married in Lee County. 1818. Bar bara Fritz Fritts born June 15. 1796, probably In North Carolina, but t he place is not definitely known. Barbara Fritz the daughter of John Frit z, a soldier in the Revolution, and his wife Mary, maiden surname unkno wn See the Fritz Family) After the marriage of William, James, his fathe r, deeded him a tract of land adjoining John Fritz, but shortly thereafte r, William sold this tract of land and purchased land lying on Wallens Cre ek from the Weavers, where he established his home overlooking Wallens Cre ek. His house was constructed of hewed logs -large L-shaped two story, t wo story front poachers two stairways, a full basement (cellar), and had t wo massive stone chimneys. Here he reared his family and lived the re st of his life. William Jayne was a well-to-do farmer and one of the outst anding citizens of the community. He was-active in the Thompson Settleme nt Baptist Church, ordained deacon on the first Sunday in June, 1834, -a nd he and his wife served as deacon land deaconess for many years.

William Jayne was too old for service in the War Between the States, but h is youngest son and two of his grandsons were soldiers in this war. His s on and one of his grandsons were numbered among the Confederate dead.

William Jayne had a very fine saddle mare of which he was especially prou d. and when he would learn the Union soldiers were marching that way he wo uld mount his mare and ride away at a fast pace into the woodland until th ey had passed.

William and Barbara Jayne are buried in the family graveyard lying a sho rt distance west of the old home.

William Jayne provided well for his family. He had a well stocked and prod uctive farm - orchards - fruits of all kinds, and in season made maple syr up and sugar for family consumption. The two little orphan granddaughte rs were happy when this time came-some was always saved for Christmasl

Before his death William Jayne deeded his homeplace to the two daughte rs of his deceased son John, and one of the girls, a few years after her m arriage, moved to her grandfather's old home where she lived for several y ears.

After the death of her husband, Barbara Jayne broke up housekeeping and we nt to live with her two sons, James Jr. and William Jr., dividing her ti me between them. She died at the home of her son James Jr., May 15, 1892.
