5. JAMES3 FERGUSON (ANDREW2, JOHN1) was born September 04, 1804 in Spartanburg Dist., SC, and died January 05, 1863 in Jasper, Pickens Co., GA. He married BARBARA MALISSA PHILLIPS Abt. 1824 in (probably) Pendleton Dist., SC, daughter of LEVI PHILLIPS, SR.. She was born 1805 in SC, and died October 1865 in Marietta, Cobb Co., GA.

Notes for J
AMES FERGUSON:
PACOLET, a small river which rises in the Blue Ridge, in the western part of North Carolina, and flowing through Spartanburg and Union districts of South Carolina, enters the Broad river at Pinckneyville. Its general course is E. S. E., and its length perhaps 100 miles. The South Pacolet is a small stream which enters the former about 12 miles N. from Spartanburg Court House.
*****
"I am descended from James Ferguson who was born in Spartanburg Dist., SC, Sept. 4, 1804, and died in Pickens Co., GA, Jan. 5, 1863. He married Barbara Malissa Phillips abt. 1824 probably in Pendleton Dist., SC (now Pickens Co.). They had 14 children. From circumstantial evidence I believe his father was Andrew Ferguson who bought property on Motlow's Creek of the Pacolate River in Spartanburg Dist. on
Sept. 2, 1805. Over the next 13 years his name appeared on many transactions as grantor, grantee, neighbor and witness. He sold his property on Sept. 7, 1816, and apparently continued to live in Spartanburg Dist. until 1818 when he witnessed a deed of sale on 15 Aug. He was enumerated on the 1810 census in Spartanburg Dist. He was living in Pendleton Dist. in 1820 probably in the part which became Pickens Dist. in 1826. Andrew and John Ferguson were recorded as purchasers at the estate sale of Abner Crosby in Pickens Dist. on Feb. 6, 1829. In 1830 Andrew was enumerated in Pickens Dist., SC as the next door neighbor of my James Ferguson. This was the first record which drew my attention to Andrew as a possible ancestor. There was also a John Ferguson and wife both between 20 and 30 enumerated on that same census in the same vicinity. This may be John L. and Agnes Cobb Ferguson since their first child was not born until 1832. Andrew and James were also enumerated
as neighbors on the Pickens Co. 1840 census. James was listed on the 1850 census for Pickens Co., SC, but Andrew was not so I assumed that he and his wife died before 1850. Recently, I was told by a cousin who lives in Charleston, SC, that he died Nov. 16, 1843. She had taken the date from some
source on the internet and thus far I have not been able to confirm it. However, it does fit with my own suspicions. The same source also says that Andrew's wife was named Mary and that she was the daughter of James Alexander, Sr. According to a couple of deeds I have, James Alexander was indeed a neighbor of Andrew Ferguson.
James Ferguson, my ancestor, moved to Cherokee (now Pickens) Co., GA, about 1851 taking most of his family with him. James and several of his children were enumerated as heads of households on the 1860 census for Pickens Co. He died Jan. 5, 1863 in Pickens Co. and Barbara died in the fall of 1865 in
Cobb Co., GA. They are both buried in Norton Cemetery on a hill overlooking Jasper, GA. Their son Capt. Paschal F. Ferguson erected a stone for his father which states that James was born in Spartanburg Dist., SC. Their son Wilburn erected a stone to Barbara. One more piece of evidence points to the fact that James was the son of Andrew. He and Barbara named their oldest son Andrew who was born 18 Jul 1825 in Pendleton Dist., SC. Andrew moved to Greene Co., AL and was enumerated there on Nov. 18, 1850 as an overseer. He died on Aug. 31, 1854 and his father James was appointed as administrator of his estate according to papers on file in Pickens Co., GA. Andrew had at least 2 daughters and 7 sons. He had 1 son born before 1800, 4 sons born between 1800 and 1810 and 2 sons born between 1810 and 1820. So far, James is the only one I have identified. Years ago, I suspected that John L. was one of the sons born between 1800 and 1810. I had several ancestors who settled in Gordon Co. while it was still part of Cass Co., some arrived as early as March 1834 while it was still occupied by the Cherokee Nation. I have been doing research in Gordon Co. for 30 years, so I ran across John L. Ferguson many years ago. I have even been to Curtis Cemetery. I was convinced at one time that John L. was James's brother before I even knew about Andrew. When I found out about Andrew, I was certain John L. was his son because there was even a son named Andrew. This information combined with the census information stated above convinced me that Andrew had a son named John and that John L. was that son. I recently learned that John L. had a brother named Andrew. I am pretty sure that Andrew was in Spartanburg Dist., Sept. 4, 1804 when James was born. I know he was there in 1805 when he bought the property on Motlow's/Motley's Creek. The deed states that he was a resident of Spartanburg Dist. Years ago before I knew about the phonetical spelling that officials resorted to in the past, I had a hard time finding Andrew until I began checking various misspellings of Ferguson. Andrew's name was misspelled many times in early records which led me to believe that he spoke with a thick accent or heavy brogue. I have not found Andrew on the 1800 census. Is John Furguson on page 257 of the 1830 Pickens Dist., SC census John Lewis? In looking at the 1850 census, it appears that John L. arrived in GA between 1832 and 1840. Son William was born in SC and daughter Salina was born in Georgia. On the 1840 census for Habersham Co, I see an Andrew and a John Ferguson on pages 131 and 132.
When I related that Andrew had 4 sons born between 1800 and 1810, I was assuming that 3 of them were John L., James and Andrew. In looking at the 1850 census, I noticed that there was a head of household named Jabez Ferguson. Jabez was born 1809 in SC and there were 5 others in the household: Sabra (27, SC), A. R. (16, SC), James W. (14, SC), John A. (12, GA), Mary J. (6, GA). If Sabra is Jabez's wife, she was probably a second wife unless she became a mother at 11 years old. There are several Fergusons in Gordon Co., GA that I have not been able to identify. --- Don Forsythe, Georgetown, TX (2000)

He married DOROTHY COBB March 11, 1832, daughter of WILLIAM COBB and SARAH ABBOTT. She was born May 25, 1811 in Pendleton District, South Carolina, and died July 21, 1878 in Nashville, Howard Co., Arkansas.

Notes for A
NDREW FERGUSON, JR.:
Dr. John L. Ferguson (1993) "The Ferguson Lineage of John Lewis Ferguson":
"Our earliest ancestor of whom we have definite knowledge is Andrew Ferguson, born May 25, 1807 in South Carolina. My father told me that Andrew, his grandfather, was "half-Irish." Andrew was probably the son of Andrew Ferguson, Sr., who died in Pickens Co., SC in 1843, and his wife, Sarah.
*****
Andrew and Dorothea Cobb Ferguson were both born in SC. They moved with their young family, Bailus, Simp, and Malinda, to Dirt Town or Dirt Town Valley, GA, in 1838. This location today would be four miles southeast of Summerville in the direction of Rome, Georgia. They were still there during the 1850 census. Six more children were born to them while they were in GA, the youngest being my great-grandfather, John Lewis Ferguson, born May 4, 1851. William and Sarah Cobb, parents of 'Dorothy' Ferguson, also moved to GA from SC, settling near Calhoun.
Then in the fall of 1857, they moved to Sevier Co., AR. They settled at Drip Springs on the banks of Blue Bayou, a short distance north of the present day Blue Bayou Church of Christ. (Now in Howard Co., this location was then in Blue Bayou Township, Sevier Co.) In 1859, Andrew paid taxes on eighty acres of land on Blue Bayou. Centre Point (now Center Point) was their post office. The county seat was at Paraclifta on the Cossatot River. --- Dr. John L. Ferguson (1993)
In 1859, the family moved their church letter from Poplar Springs Baptist Church in Georgia to County Line Baptist Church. Andrew was an ordained Baptist deacon. Andrew Ferguson said Sevier County was so green and beautiful. They learned why the county was named Sevier after the first winter, the weather was so "severe." In 1860, the family moved into a log house in what was then the edge of Brewer Township, in Pike County, in the rocky hills northwest of Nashville. Perhaps this terrain was similar to the land they had left in Georgia.

Notes for D
OROTHY COBB:
As far as is known, Dorothy Cobb Ferguson was the only one of the nine children of William and Sarah Cobb who came to Arkansas from Georgia. Dorothy Cobb's death date is listed as July 15, 1878, in the William Cobb family Bible in the possession of Ms. Pearl Hardin in 1979.

  Notes for MILES N. FERGUSON:
A family story concerns Miles, one of Andrew's sons, who may have been retarded or at least mentally slower than average. According to a story related to Dr. John L. Ferguson by his cousin, James E. Ferguson, Miles was "not right peart (pert)." Andrew sent Miles to Augusta for supplies. When his return was delayed the father organized a search party. Miles was found in the wagon, three days by the roadside, lost and disoriented.
In the 1860 census, Miles was a farm laborer, living in the household of his father Andrew Ferguson in Brewer Township, Pike Co., AR.
