1. LODOWICK1 WILLIAMS (THOMAS S.A)1,2 was born Bef. 1620 in Baltimore Co., MD (perhaps), and died Abt. 1684 in (Pasquotank Co.) Albemarle Precinct, NC3. He married (1) HANNAH ULN4 Aft. 1673. She was born Bet. 1640 - 1650 in Pasquotank Co., NC, and died Aft. 1715. He married (2) MARY STRINGER5 August 23, 1674 in Anne Arundel Co., MD, daughter of JAMES STRINGER and ANN ULN. She was born Abt. 1654.

Lodowick's will mentions sons Edward (minor), William, and daughter Eleanor. Lodowick was apparently in Anne Arundel Co., MD before coming to NC. He was administrator for his father-in-law James Stringer's estate. His second wife, Hannah, and son Edward went to Baltimore, Maryland in 1715 to claim property assumed to be Lodwick's.

"The following is what I was able to glean regarding Lodowick Williams from the sources I had here at home. Jim ___ has incorporated all this into what he found at the State Library in Columbus, Ohio. There is a quite good picture of Lodowick from 1663-1684 when he died.
There is a question in my mind regarding Henry Sawyer. Some give him as born in VA; then some have him born in England. There is an IGI entry regarding Henry Sawyer with a dau. Elizabeth born in England. Someday, someone will have to check the church record in England via microfilm. LODOWICK WILLIAMS

This is a report arranged by date as to the findings in relationship to Lodowick:

1. 13 Nov 1663--Lodowick Williams indentured to Mathew Powell for 4 years, bound for St. Christopher. A Thomas Williams was also indentured to Mathew Powell on the same date for 6 years, bound for St. Christopher. There is no known relationship between Lodowick and Thomas Wiliams. [Peter Wilson Coldham, The Bristol Registers of Servants Sent to Foreign Plantations, 1654-1686 (Baltimore:Genealogical Publ. Co., Inc., 1988), 198.]

2. 1664--Lodowick Williams transported to Maryland from St. Christopher by John Collier in 1664, and was involved in surveying land and other transactions there between 1665 and 1672. Citation/

*The 1668 patent for Service to Lodowick is missing. It is Liber 12 folio 284 as found on page 508 of Gust Skordas, The Early Settlers of Maryland, (Gen. Publ. Co., Inc., 1974).

3. 24 Jun 1674--Lodowick Williams was listed of one of the debtors of Gofry Harmer of Baltimore County, Maryland. [V.L. Skinner, Jr., Abstracts of the Inventories and Accounts of the Prerogative Court of Maryland, 1674-1678 and 1699-1703 (Libers 1-5), 3 as found in Inventory Liber 1:48) Hereafter cited as Skinner, Abstracts.]

4. 23 Aug 1674--Lodowick Williams' father-in-law is dead and the Chancery Court of MD at St. Mary's is inquiring into what lands James Stringer held at his death. James Stringer "late of Ann Arundell County, deced dyed Seized of within the Co.ty of Ann Arundell...." Mary Williams is identified as the wife of Lodowick Williams and the daughter of James Stringer. The six men appointed to study the matter found that James Stringer did have twenty acres; "Mary Williams wife of Lodowick Williams is the only heir of James Stringer. They found that Mary Williams is the Right heir to 150 acres of land also. [Archives of Maryland, 51:136.]

5. 13 Nov 1674--Lodowick Williams married 13 Nov 1674, Mary Stringer, daughter of James Stringer. Citation? IGI is source; no other documentation available at this time.

6. 12 Dec 1674--Lodowick Williams was a juror in the suit of Samuel Winslow, administrator of Henry Webb's estate against John Bowles, executor of Wm Battin's estate of St. Mary's County, MD. This suit took place in the Provincial Court, located at _____. The other jurors were Philip Lynes, John Bigger, Richard Fountaine, Richard Bayly, George Marshall, Thomas Doxey, Thomas Gant, Thomas Kemp, John Hollins, George Gunnell and Richard Rigell. 7. 12 Dec 1674--Lodowick Williams was a juror in Maryland Provincial Court, _____, MD, in the case of John Peerce against John Code. The jurors other than Lodowick were Philip Lines, Abraham Rhodes, Richard Rigell, James Williams, Tobias Wells, Michael Miller, John Rice, George Charlesworth, John Bigger, Edward Skidmore and Stephen Murty. 8. 12 Dec 1674--Lodowick Williams was a juror in Maryland Provincial Court, _____, MD, in the case of John and Susanna Gerard of St. Mary's County, MD, vs. John Coode. The jurors other than Lodowick were Philip Lynes, Abraham Rhoades, Richard Ridgall, James William, Tobias Wells, Michael Miller, John Rice, George Charlsworth, John Bigger, Edward Skidmore, and Stephen Murty. 9. 8 Oct 1675--Lodowick Williams is a debtor of a very large number of debtors of Thomas Salmon, no county given. The county is later identified as Cecil in an account record, #1926. [Skinner, Abstracts, 28, as found in Inventories 2:160.]

10. 1675--John Ingram, administrator of George Harris sued Lodowick Williams in Provincial Court, ______, MD. Kenelm Cheseldyn was the Attorney for Lodowick Williams. Cheseldyn appears and imparle until the next court. [Archives of Maryland, 65:568.]

11. 24 Nov 1675--John Ingram, administrator of George Harris against Lodowick Williams. The case, as well as six others, were discontinued as the plaintiffs did not appear in Provincial Court, _____, MD. [Archives of Maryland, 65:613.]

12. Jan 1675/6--Lodowick Williams' name is found on a receipt of Samuell Beston (sheriff of Baltimore) for undernamed bills. This was found in the Inventory of Charles de la Roche, Liber 1:518-533. There were numerous names. [Skinner, Abstracts (Liber 1-5), 75.]

13. 22 Feb 1675/6--Lodowick Williams is mentioned in the inquiry held in Chancery Court Proceedings at St. Mary's, MD, regarding the land that James Stringer legally owned at his death. Thomas Beeson of Ann Arundell County was ordered to inquire into the matter because:

"We are informed that James Stringer, late of your County at the time of his death was Seized
in his demeasne as of f_____ Lands & Tenem.ts in your Said County w.ch of Right ought to
descend to many (sic) Williams wife of Lodowick Williams & Daughter & heir of the S.d James
Stringer decd." [Later in the document, James Stringer's daughter is given as Mary.]

The six men chosen to study the question returned and reported:

"We of the Jury of Inquest whose names are hereunder written do unaimously Concurr and agree
that James Stinger of the county of Ann Arundell deced dyed Seized of Twenty acres of Land
Lying on the South Side of Severne River in ye county and that Mary Williams y.e wife of
Lodowick Williams ought Rigt to be heir thereunto & that the S.D. Stringer dyed of no other
Land as we find but ot the Sd Twenty acres Said and is in the possession of M.R Richard Hill
of the Co.ty aforesd. the one hundred & fifty acres Supposed to be James Stringer Escheated Land
for that we find the Rent thereof hath been paid & is now in the possession of mr Nath.ll Heathcoate
never Surveyed for James Stringer in his lifetime." [Archives of Maryland, 51:154.]

14. 15 Apr 1676--Lodowick Williams and James Denton were appraisers of Joseph Pierce, Baltimore County, MD. [Skinner, Abstracts (Libers 1-5), 25, as found in Inventories, 2:122.]

15. 17 Apr 1676--Lodowick Williams and James Denton were appraisers of William Powell's estate, no county given. [Skinner, Abstracts. (Libers 1-5), 24, as found in Inventories, 2:74.

16. 8 Oct 1677--Lodwick Williams is one that Payments were made to from the Estate of John Taylor of Baltimore Co., MD. However, it was paid to Thomas Jones. There is a notation after Lodwick's name "(fled from province)". [Skinner, Abrstracts (Libers 1-5), 50, as found in Accounts, Liber 4:334.]

17. 9 Oct 1677--Lodwick Williams is one who a payment was supposed to be made on the estate of Thomas Carleton in Cecil County, MD. There is a notation after his name "(runaway)". [Skinner, Abstracts (Libers 1-5), 52, as found in Accounts, Liber 4:391.]

18. 22 Feb 1677/8--Lodowick Williams was being sued by John Baker. Lodowick was represented by Robert Ridgely who "appeared and imparles until the next court." [Archives of Maryland, 67:206.]

19. 6 Jan 1680--Lodowick Williams, a debtor in the Inventory of William Hollis of Baltimore County, MD. [Skinner. Abstracts, (Libers 6-8), 28, as found in Liber 7A:344.]

20. 6 May 1681--Lodowick Williams is listed in the Sureties in the Accounts of Samuell Boston, deceased, in Baltimore Co., MD.. Edward Williams, is also listed there. In the list of "Payments to" there appears: "Kenelme Chisledine for attorney fees to recover mortgage of William Ridge mortgaged to deceased by Lodowick Williams, Kenelme Chisledine for judgment vs. Ed. 21. 17 Dec 1682--Lodowick Williams and Edward Williams are listed in the Inventory of Robert Ridgely, gentleman, of St. Mary's Co., MD, as debtors. [Skinner, Abstracts, (Libers 6-8), as found in Inventories, Liber 8:295.]

22. 10 Jan 1691--Lodowick Williams is listed among those debtors identified as "out of the county" in the Inventory filed with the will of Capt. Nicholas Gassaway, Anne Arundel Co., MD. [Skinner, Abstracts (Libers 9-11B), 73-74, as found in Liber 11A:36 of Inventories.]

Notes for HANNAH ULN:
She was executrix of husband Lodwick's will. She and son, Edward, went to Baltimore in 1715 to claim property (assumed to be Lodwick's property).

Also had a relative named Caleb Coan; mentioned in notes of William Williams:
1737 John Sawyer and John Relfe to Caleb Coan adjoining Edward Williams and William Williams to Richard Sawyer and Joseph Morgan lines. Was this a son of Daniel and Mary Sawyer Coan?

James R. Barbee's notes:

"I am descended from Lod(o)wick WILLIAMS AND his son, William, and am particularly looking for information about that family. I think Hannah married Lodowick WILLIAMS before 1673 and Garrett KOEN(COAN) after 1684 and I show her death after 1715. Lodowick was married two previous times and had three children but I am not sure which of the wives was the mother of the William. I have developed several scenarios and am looking for confirmation or correction.

Hannah was executrix of husband Lodwick's will. She and son Edward went to Baltimore in 1715 to claim property (assumed to be Lodwick's propery).
Hannah's last name is seen in various documents as WILLIAMS, KEON, COAN, GARRET. The following are possible scenarios:
Scenario #1 - Was GARRETT or GARRETTSON Hannah's maiden name or maybe an earlier husband's ? Lodowick posted bond in 1670 in MD with John COLLIER and John WATERTON to administer the estate of John GARRETTSON.
Scenario #2 - Per Thalia T. Jones, Hannah's brother Daniel COAN married Mary SAWYER, sister of Elizabeth SAWYER WILLIAMS. Maybe she was a COAN who married 1. John GARRETTSON , 2. Lodwick WILLIAMS, 3. Garrett COAN. The 1711 event in MD, where Hannah KEON was certified as being the widow of Lodowick, certainly agrees with her having married Garrett COAN(KEON) after Lodwick's death.
Scenario #3 - Maybe she was a COAN who married 1, Lodowick WILLIAMS, 2. Garrett COAN (could have been a cousin, uncle, or no relation at all). The name GARRETT would have been the given name of her second husband, not the surname of a husband)
Scenario #4 - Unknown maiden name who married 1. LodowIck WILLIAMS, 2. Garrett COAN

Scenarios #2, #3, #4 all agree with MD and Pasquotank Co., NC documents which show Hannah KEON establishing her rights as the widow of Lodowick WILLIAMS after she married a KEON/KOEN/COAN.
