Notes of John B. Williams, Marshville, NC, 1962

"The Williamses, Williamsons, Williamstons, Wilhelms, and Willinghams are branches of one ancestral tree. Variations in spelling the name may have come about thru the natural courses of travel, environment, and the exercise of individual taste.
During a period of religious persecution in Europe over three centuries ago, Edward Williams left his native land, the little country of Wales, and found a home in the American wilderness, probably in eastern Virginia or North Carolina. Edward Williams's will was found in Pasquotank Co., NC.
A number of Williamses figured prominently in the history of Halifax County during the Revolutionary period. The records show that Joseph Williams, son of the original Edward Williams, was living in Halifax during the Revolution and that Rev. Joseph Williams, son of the first Joseph, took an active part in the war, serving as chaplain, and in other capacities during the time.
Following the Revolution, Rev. Joseph Williams moved with his wife, Marthy Parrot, from their home in what is now Duplin County, to the Meadow Branch community in Union County (then Anson), on what is known as the William Ervin Williams plantation, two miles from Wingate. Rev. Joseph Williams was the first Baptist preacher to enter central and western North Carolina, and was very active in his chosen field, organizing and building numerous churches in his day."
