Tullis and Lois were fraternal twins. They were healthy babies, but neither of them survived early childhood. Tullis, the little boy, died of an infectious disease, probably whooping cough. Lois died from accidently sucking a piece of popcorn down her windpipe. She didn't die immediately, but a few days later when the foreign object blocking the bronchial tube caused infection. Both deaths would have been so easily treated today. Grandmother Leona was pregnant with Oleta when Lois died. She was 38 years old and had already had seven children. No wonder pictures of her in her forties show a care worn lady. Yet I never heard her complain about anything. By the time I was born, Grandmother was well into her seventies. She still crocheted beautifully, dipped snuff in the afternoon to relax, and loved to fish with a cane pole better than anyone I ever knew. She was never critical of me and always said that I was "awfully sweet". She was the kind of grandmother every child should have. - - Charlotte Rose Williams Jeffers, August 11, 1998.
