As a young man, Joseph had traveled to Texas but returned to Kentucky and became the first merchant in Adair County. He married somewhere in Tennesee about 1853 to Martha Ellen Buster, Born about 1837 in Kentucky, daughter of either John and Marth Buster or Oliver and Maude Buster. Joseph owned extensive land holdings in Adair County and was a member of the Masonic Lodge. Joseph also operated a tan yard and general store in Creelsboreo, Russell Coubty, Kentucky.
