Notes for Joseph Austin: Some say he b. Tenterden, Kent Co. England; Mormon records say he b. NH.
Nantucket vital records call him Joseph from Hampton and Dover.
Nantucket vital records say he d. 1663.
Ancestry of Foy-Macy, p. 77 Joseph Austin is said to have come from Hampton where there was a Joseph Austin in 1642. He was taxed at Dover in 1648. In 1640 he purchased of Richard Waldron one fourth part of the old mill at Cochece, lower falls, for accommodation for which he received in 1652 the wood of 3 acres. In 1658 he exchanged with Elder William Wentworth "Emery's farm" for other land. Joseph lived at Cocheco, New Hampshire. He married as his second wife Sarah, daughter of Elder Edward Starbuck and widow of William Story (Story d. about 1658). After his own death Sarah married Humphrey Varney whose first wife had been her sister Esther. Joseph Austin's will was dated June 6, 1662 and proved July 1, 1663. He gave his wife some portion, the remainder he divided equally among all his children (unnamed) save the eldest Thomas who was to have a double share.
There has been some confusion over the mothers of his children. Edith Moore said he m. Sarah Starbuck in 1649 and d. ca1658. Other sources say he m. her c1660 and his first wife is mother of all his children except Mary. He wrote his will in 1662 so he was alive then. If Sarah's first husband, William Story, d. in 1658 they couldn't have been m. earlier.
