Name: Agnes Goad Birth: 1750 Death: 1790 in Watauga, TN. of Indian raid Note: She and her husband, Owen Adkins, were killed by Indians in 1790. Family tradition reports that their orphaned children were split up to live with their uncles, apparently, Peter and Lewis, in Hopkins and Christian Counties, Kentucky. After they grew up most of the children lived in Clinton County, Kentucky and Fentress County, Tennessee. In a small book, HISTORY OF FENTRESS COUNTY, TENNESSEE, the author interviewed 102 year-old Martha McDonald in 1920. She was the daughter of Milly Adkins Smith one of the orphaned children. Martha appears to have reported John and Margaret Goad as the grandparents of Milly thus the parents of Agnes. The family Bible of Phillip and Milly (Adkins) Smith had been left to Martha although its later location was unknown. Martha told her children that notations in it reported that Agnes and Owen had been killed by Indians on Bays Mountain. The only Goads known to be on Bays Mountain at the time was John and Margaret Goad. Agnes is of the correct age to have been their daughter. This is only an estimated year of birth based upon the assumption that she may have been about 20-years-old when she married.

Some internet sources say b. Lunenberg Co. VA and d. Hawkins Co. TN.
From the obituary of their grandson Wyatt Adkins who d. in 1882 "his grandparents were natives of VA and after marriage and having a considerable family removed to Hawkins Co. TN, then a territory, where about the year 1790, with 2 of their children, were massacred by Indians".
The location of their cabin may be given in the following: Deed Book 1, p. 29, Pulaski Co. KY 1790 "know all men be these presents that I, Wiatt Adkins, of the Co. of Washington and State of VA, hath bargained, sold and delivered a certain tract or parcel of land containing 300 acres until Jeremiah Counch, of the county and state above written on the north side of (?) River begin at the fish sholes running down for compliment for 300 acres known by the name of Oen Adkins Cabins to which I bin myself, my heir, executor and administrators and assigns in the sum of 400 pounds inst and (?) money of the State of VA, the 24th of (?) 1790. (East Kentuckian, Dec. 1968).
Despite the above, the exact location has never been found. It was said that two of their children escaped the massacre by hiding in a hollow log (Lora Jeffries, 2004)
