The family
history of our ancestor John JENNINGS is unknown. We are unsure of his birth
place other than Virginia and his parents and siblings are a mystery. According
to the 1850 census record John was born in Roanoke, Virginia, which was still
Botetourt County at the time of his estimated birth, 1822. On his 1889 Floyd
county death record, his wife Hannah stated his place of birth as Franklin
County, Virginia. In 1890, Hannah was living in the home of her son John W.
where a Thomas and Catherine JENNINGS ages 60 and 62 were also living. I can
only guess that Thomas, born about 1830, is the senior John’s brother and is
the only possible clue I have as to his family. Based on this information I am
now researching Roanoke, Franklin and Botetourt counties as well as Floyd and
Montgomery and can use all the help and input from other researchers I can
find. Thank you, you can e-mail me at mailto:moocow@megsinet.net

across whom I believe to be John and Hannah (WIMMER) JENNINGS listed
in the FCVA 1850 census as IDINGS. Have
found no further evidence of a John and Hannah ID(D)INGS in FCVA with a
daughter Mary E. whereas subsequent JENNINGS listings for John and
Hannah stay fairly consistent. There is a Jonathan and Hannah (PHARES) IDINGS
in FCVA family # 207 with a 4 year old daughter Abigill but is definitely a
different family from this John and Hannah IDINGS listing)

Back on October 25, 1978, a first cousin of mine received
the following letter from a Mrs. MARTIN of Roanoke, VA. (possibly Mrs.
Frederick Martin) but the return address is smudged and hard to read. Mrs.
Martins’ Letter:
Dear Mr. Hoffman;
In regard to your letter, I regret to
say I am unable to help you with your research on the JENNINGS family. I really
believe you have some other JENNINGS mixed up with my father John Jennings. He
married Anna Eliza POFF instead of a WIMMER and both were born at Pilot, VA. I
have asked both of my older sisters if they could help in any way, also gave
them your letter to read and they both said it was over their head that they
could not give me any information for you. I do not have the family bible and I
doubt it would help any.
I also talked to my nephew Nelson
RIDINGER last week, and I told him we were unable to help you in any way
looking up the JENNINGS. Good luck with your research, so sorry I could not be
of any help to you.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Martin
Mrs. Martin
Missing this lead really hurts as Mrs. Martin is obviously the daughter of John William JENNINGS, Jr., the son of John and Hannah (WIMMER) JENNINGS. She is probably John and Eliza’s third daughter Edith “Birlie” G. as she mentions “both of her older sisters” who would be 1.)Hester Blanche who married (1st.) A.G. EPPERLY (2nd.) Harvey Jackson RIDINGER and 2.)Vera O. for whom I have no marriage info. In 1910 Anna Eliza claims to have had “8 children, 8 living” although I show a twin boy Cleveland who died at 7 months in September 1893, born to her with son George W. Mrs. Martin mentions a nephew Nelson RIDINGER who would be the son of Hester Blanche. John William and Anna Eliza have a fourth daughter Annie Madeline for whom I also have no further information on.
