Notes for T
HOMAS HUDNALL:
The Descendants of Thomas HUDNALL born
1822-1827 and Mary POFF born 1832-1834
As compiled by Charles K. Jennings a great, great grandson

The parents of our ancestor Thomas HUDNALL are unknown. We can be certain that Thomas is a descendant of Joseph HUDNALL, Jr. and Mary Ann TAYLOR (the progenitors of the Kanawha County, (West) Virginia HUDNALL line), probably a grandson or great grandson. Prior to 1850, census records did not list spouses or children by name thus Thomas does not appear until 1850 where he is shown as head of household with his wife Mary. The first known record of Thomas in Kanawha County is that of his marriage on December 06, 1849 to Mary Jane GOFF. The hand written record clearly shows Mary's name as GOFF while family tradition states her name as POFF. During my research I have looked for any evidence leading to Mary's name as either GOFF or POFF playing an impartial role. I have found nothing absolute but am quite certain that Thomas' wife is Mary POFF as family tradition dictates. I further believe that Mary's parents are George POFF and Lucy TRAIL who were married in Montgomery County, Virginia October 15, 1825 but again, no real proof. Most POFF researchers have George and Lucy as being deceased by 1850 with three children named Lewis, Margaret and Julia. Ironically in 1850, a George and Mary POFF show up in Kanawha County and on the census are living next door to our Thomas and Mary HUDNALL. Furthermore, two of their children marry into the HUDNALL line in Kanawha County. Eliza POFF married a John HUDNALL, Jr. May 21, 1857 and George POFF, Jr. married a Rosanna HUDNALL June 16, 1867. Finally, a Cynthia Ann POFF married a Joseph HUDNALL October 31, 1848 but I am unsure if this might be another daughter of George and Lucy as she is married prior to the 1850 census. My heart tells me that she probably is, as George and Lucy are the first and only POFF family in Kanawha County in 1850. On a closing note, a Henry TRAIL and Catharine KINNETT were married on October 02, 1831 in Floyd County, Virginia, which was part of Montgomery County until 1831, where George POFF and Lucy TRAIL were married. From 1840 to 1880 there is a Henry and Catharine TRAIL in Kanawha County with a son John who married Eliza A. HUDNALL again, in Kanawha County on December 01, 1871, daughter of our Thomas and Mary HUDNALL. Enough said. This genealogy report shows the information of living individuals that does not appear on my web page as we should respect each others privacy. If you share information with others outside our family group please exclude dates, places and so on for all living persons. I still have a lot of gaps in my research and would appreciate input from everyone who would like to share their family information. Notes for M
ARY J. (POSSIBLE D/O GEO.&LUCY) POFF:
According to family history, Mary was visiting relatives one evening about three weeks after the birth of her son Benjamin Franklin Hudnall. She claimed to have heard her husband Thomas calling her and headed for home taking a familar short cut rather than the beaten path. After Mary didn't show up for quite some time, her family went out looking for her. Along the trail of the short cut she had taken, was a narrow cliff and Mary had apparently fallen off and was killed by the fall. At the bottom of the ravine where her body lay was also the body of a dead bear. As the story goes, Mary must have met up with the bear and they both were killed by the fall. According to my mother's grandfather, the then three week old boy Benjamin, the memorial at the Virginia Chapel Cemetery in Cedar Grove, Kanawha County, West Virginia was erected on top of Mary's grave. The chapel is located across state route 60 from Woodlawn Cemetery.
