Notes for Joel Barnard:
[Barnard descendent report.FTW]
The following was provided to me by Randy Brown ([email protected] on 3/10/1999 - his wife is descendant of Joel & Melvina Barnard
This is a copy of a copy made by Claire B. Scofield of "MEMORIES OF OUR FAMILY," by Francis George Brenner. She was a daughter of Polly Barnard George, making her a granddaughter of Joel and Melvina Barnard. I know not everything is correct. For instance, as far as I know, the Bogle family was from VA, not the Barnard branch we are concerned with. Francis George Brenner died June 5, 1951 so all I know is that this document was made prior to that date. Everything that is not enclosed in square brackets is original.]
Our Grandparents were Joel and Melvina Bogle Barnard. They lived in Virginia, kept slaves, had plantations and were well to do.
Grandma said she had a "black mammy," as her mother did not nurse her children.
She and Grandfather were married Aug. 2, 1832 and left the old plantation with several other young married couples [here the date is right, but I know there is a record of the marriage of Joel Barnard and Malinda Bogle in Washington County, IN on this date]. They came horseback to Indiana, Washington Co. The Gov't had just opened up this territory for settlement by homesteaders.
Three of their children were born there or on the way to Iowa (according to the dates there must have been 6 instead of3 - Claire B. Scofield). They lived there a few years then came to Iowa when it was opened for settlement. They came with ox teams to the old Drury Landing and crossed the Mississippi River at Fairport, Iowa on an old flatboat or barge in Nov. 1843.
There Mother, Polly Barnard, was born on Nov. 26th 1843 less than 3 weeks after they landed.
Grandfather and the two oldest boys, Reuel and Andrew, aged 10 & 8, went with ox teams out to locate land for their home and found 160 acres near Sweetland Center, IA. (Sweetland Center is just a few miles N.E. of Muscatine. Now just called Sweetland.) They built a sod house there and went back for Grandmother and the other children.
They built a sod fence around the 160 acres. The Sod House was their first home in that part of the country. Later they built a 2 story brick house on the place. Aunt Bertha was born there and another girl Melissa who only lived to be about 6 yrs. old. Three children were buried there, one of which was Uncle Reuel's baby.
Grandfather later sold the place and bought 40 acres closer to Muscatine which was called Bloomington Township then. The 40 acres was about 4.5 miles from town. It is now known as the "Old Chamberlain Place." The old brick house was still standing on the 160 A. farm at the time this was written. (Francis died June 5, 1951).
Grandfather was a cabinet maker, he made household things like chairs, cabinets, cupboards, tables, everything was made of wood in those days. Mother had one chair left he made. Eva [I don't know who this is.] has that now.
Grandfather and Grandmother are both buried in Harker's Cemetery near Muscatine as are Reuel and Amos George, sons of Polly and Lewis George.((Directions to Harker Cemetery: From Route 61, five miles east of Muscatine, turn south on Sweetland Road. Travel a mile or so then turn East on 180th Street (gravel road). Cemetery is 1/4 mile on your left. ))
Note. This was copied from as scrap book owned by Mrs. Nellie Bodkin, a sister of Francis George Brenner. Mrs. Bodkin now lives at 119 Cedar St. in Muscatine. [Claire Scofield made the first copy in the late 1950's. He was a grandson of Reuel Barnard and a great-grandson of Joel and Melvina. My father-in-law is also a grandson of Reuel, great-grandson of Joel and Melvina, and a cousin of Claire Scofield.]
