My dear cousin George and cousin Flora, Nov. 1969, For your dear letter I thank you. It made me very happy; to have life sign from you (to be remembered by you.) Soon another year ends and we are growing older and approach the time to follow our loved ones to our Heavenly Father. On the 11th of November I wanted to go to church and blood came out of my nose and mouth and I was all alone in the house. I ran out in the street and saw workers from the telephone and asked them to help me and call my neighbor. We called my Doctor and my children. They all came. I had too high blood pressure and one artery burst and that caused it. And now I had to lay very still. The Doctor came twice a day. So comes something very ???? Now I have to take pills. We killed all the rabbits so now I don't have much work anymore. The third of May I was 80 years old. Had very sweet company. The daughter from my son Karl, with her husband and two children - one girl and a boy. They can sign and recite little. They made me very happy. I put the picture from my 80th birthday. My son and daughter-in-law from Schombeck were here and ????. Some neighbors and the Priest. The Dr. wished me well but told me that I would have to think that I might not live for much longer. I told him that I am ready and that it could go fast. My father was also 80 years. Well whatever is God's will. So many young people have to die in accidents. Otherwise I am happy and thank God every day and sing thankful my morning and evening song. I hope this letter finds you in good health. I wish you a very merry Christmas and a good new year and the best of health. I had a grand harvest in my garden. In September my youngest sister, Mary, her husband visited me. Also a few nieces and nephews. And from the old home school friends of my sons. I also have sweet girl friends from Brehem which come Saturday to pick me up and bring me back. Now I sent you to loved ones and all children best wishes and kiss you all. Our loving cousin, Hedwig and children. Thank the Lord because he is friendly and His goodness. Psalm ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// 1971 My dear George and Flora and children Thank you for your letter. I was very happy to get your picture. Thank you. I'm writing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy 1972. Yes now I have found a dear woman of 72 years old and I'm not so lonely in the house. My son lives in Osterholtzswanbeck. He is a photographer. They don't have any children and he visited me yesterday. Last summer I had a lot of company from Berlin. My sister and her husband visited me from West Berlin. They stayed six days. I had the painter and he painted our house white. Now I have to sleep a little bit as I am tired. We had beautiful apples from the tree. Next to my house they are guilding. They built 10 houses on a lot I used to own. now I only got left 777 meters (acreage) left. I had to pay 11,500 marks ($4000) to have the house and small barn and laundry room rebuilt. I had to borrow 5000 marks but now I paid it off. My grandchildren visited me with 2 children from Kill. I was very happy to have them. From my husband relations, my sister-in-law with daughter stayed 11 days here. Also lots of nieces nephews from Berlin. It was a very happy reunion and I would have liked for you to be here, too. From our old country and home town we had a lot of letters. my children's Latin teacher still writes to us. I guess just to give me a little pleasure. I would like to impose you thank you for all the good you have done for me, and the happiness you given me. It was like a gift from Heaven. I want to thank dear God for everything. I gave .???? to the construction crew and they were very happy. I took them up there and one time I fell there on a piece of wood with nails in it. I could have hurt my eye out dear God watched over me and nothing too bad happened. I thank God for that and I pray in the morning and in the evening to both of you dear George and Flora. Editor Register: Just a few words from the Sandusky boys with the Rainbow division (42d). We are now in Camp Merritt and in somewhat better quarters than we had at Brest, France, where we were five days and where it rained 24 hours out of every 24. But the only thing we do not like about it here is we cannot get home soon enough. We are to go to Camp Sherman, and from there we expect to return to Sandusky. There are still seven of us left, Sergeant Edward Trigg, Corporal Wm. Williamson, Corporal Andrew Brehendsen, Mechanic Harry Knupke, Private Ray Weaver, Private Joe Kovach and John Lipp. Sergeant Trigg says Sandusky is no place for him. His home is elsewhere but he enlisted in Sandusky. Happy Brehendsen can not wait. W. Williamson is having so much fun in New York that he has forgotten all about Sandusky. Mechanic Knupke is as happy as ever. But will be much happier when he returns. I guess this will be all for this time, so will have to close as it is now near taps. CO. After Chief of Staff Major Douglas MacArthur remarked that the Division "would stretch over the whole country like a rainbow," the coalesced national guard units were christened Rainbow Division. As the war progressed Douglas MacArthur was promoted to commander of the 84th Brigade and finally to commander of the Rainbow Division. Its four infantry regiments were respectively 165th (formerly New York's 69th); 166th (formerly Ohio's 4th); 167th (formerly Alabama's 4th); and 168th (formerly Iowa's 3rd). The field artillery, machine gun, ambulance, hospital, and other units originated in other states from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The Division saw its first action in February 1918 fighting alongside the French. The battles continued throughout the following months and on July 14, 1918 the final German offensive was contained by the 4th French Army, in which the Rainbow Division played a prominent role at the famous Battle of the Champagne. Many bloody battles and great victories followed until the Germans were finally defeated. Battles included those in the Chateau-Thierry salient where Rainbow's poet, Joyce Kilmer was killed; St. Mihiel; Verdun front and Argonne, where Rainbowmen engaged in the final battle of WW I. German occupation duty followed. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- World War I and The Rainbow Division Mary Ellen Ducey & Erica Nordmeier* World War I began in Europe in 1914, however, the United States remained neutral until 2 April 1917 when President Woodrow Wilson received permission from the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives to go to war. Three months later, in August 1917, U. S. National Guard Units from twenty-six states and the District of Columbia united to form the 42nd Division of the United States Army. Douglas MacArthur, serving as Chief of Staff for the Division, commented that it “would stretch over the whole country like a rainbow.” In this manner, the 42nd became known as the “Rainbow Division.” It comprised four infantry regiments from New York, Ohio, Alabama, and Iowa. Men from many other states, among them Illinois, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Oregon, also joined the division and became machine gunners, ambulance drivers, worked in field hospitals, or served in the military police. The Rainbow Division became one of the first sent to Europe in 1918 to support French troops in battles at Chateau-Thierry, St. Mihiel, the Verdun Front, and Argonne. On 14 July 1918 the Division, acting as part of the 4th French Army, assisted in containing the final German offensive at the Battle of Champagne. The U.S. Army’s first offensive occurred at St. Mihiel where upon hearing of the forthcoming attack the Germans ordered a partial withdrawal of troops, which was in progress when the U.S. Army attacked on 12 September 1918. Within four days, the U.S. and French troops brought the area under Allied control. Nearly two weeks later the Division participated in an attack at Meuse-Argonne, the purpose of which was to cut off the German Second Army. The German troops held onto the area until 4 November, when additional troops from the U.S. assisted in strengthening the Allied advance. On 11 November 1918, the Armistice was signed at Compiègne in France. WWII and the Rainbow Division Just before 8 a.m. on 7 December 1941, Japanese airplanes attacked the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor. The following day, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared war in a speech to the United State Congress. The Rainbow Division, which consisted of three infantry regiments, the 222nd, 232nd, and the 242nd became active again after the declaration of war. The division incorporated artillery, combat, and medical battalions, reconnaissance troops, signal and ordnance companies, and military police platoons. In the fall of 1944 under the command of General John Henning Linden the three regiments, known as “Task Force Linden,” defended against and attacked German forces along a 30-mile battlefront. As a component of the 7th Army the Rainbow Division assisted in attacks on German defensive positions in France, penetrated the Siegfried Line, a defense barrier on the German frontier, and captured the cities of Wurzburg, Schweinfurt, Furth, and Donauworth. On 29 April 1945, while heading towards Munich with the 7th Army, the Division assisted in the liberation of the Dachau Concentration Camp. The camp had been in operation as a work camp since March 1933. The 42nd Infantry Division captured the eastern section of the camp, which contained the inmates’ enclosure. The 45th Infantry Division, know as the “Thunderbird,” captured the western part, where the SS barracks were located. The troops liberated more than thirty thousand survivors. Within days, on 8 May 1945, the war ended. After V-E Day, the 42nd became part of the Army of Occupation in Ritsbahl, Germany, and later, Austria. National RDVA After World War I, while still serving as part of the Army of Occupation, the men of the division formed the Rainbow Division Veterans Association. Upon their return to the States veterans formed various sub-chapters in different parts of the country. In 1946, the Association invited officers and soldiers who served with units in the 42nd Division during World War II to become members of the National RDVA and its sub-chapters. The national RDVA has remained active, holding mid-year and annual meetings and publishing the Association’s official newsletter, the Rainbow Reveille. The Association maintains the same purpose it adopted at its creation; to perpetuate a spirit of comradeship and to keep alive the memory of their departed comrades. National RDVA Auxiliary Immediately following the formation of the 42nd Division in 1917, the women whose husbands, sons, and brothers served among the Division’s soldiers organized auxiliary chapters to support their men. Members of the auxiliary chapters knitted socks and sweaters, and made care packages to send to soldiers overseas. These activities helped support the war effort at home and also provided emotional support for women. After the war, many of the women’s organizations became affiliated with the state chapters of the RDVA and were recognized as official chapter auxiliaries; yet for several years these groups of Rainbow women did not have a formal connection as a single organization. In 1927, at the RDVA 9th Annual Reunion in Des Moines, Iowa, veterans gave support to the concept of a National Auxiliary and, in 1932, the Rainbow women formally organized the national auxiliary and developed a constitution and by-laws. The Auxiliary started its own newsletter in 1940 called the “Bulletin.” In 1943, those women whose family and sweethearts served during WWII joined the auxiliary. In tandem with the RDVA, the National Auxiliary strives to perpetuate the Rainbow’s glory. RDVA Memorial Foundation Created in 1970, the RDVA Memorial Foundation provides funding for scholarships and memorials as well as support for research, publications, archives, and museums that reflect the contributions of the Rainbow Division. Among the memorials created by the Foundation are an outdoor amphitheater in Muskogee, OK, a Dachau Liberation plaque at Dachau, and the WWI General Gouraud Navarin Farm Tomb and Monument in France. RDVA, Records, UNL Libraries In 1989 the RDVA selected the University Libraries at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as its primary repository for the records of the association. In addition to UNL, the U.S. Army Military Institute, Carlisle Barracks, in Pennsylvania serves as a secondary repository. Artifacts relating to the RDVA and the Division’s history are located at museums in Wisconsin, Virginia, New York, Missouri, and Indiana. In 1999 the University Libraries received a grant from the RDVA Foundation to process and index the records of the RDVA. The money provided allowed Archives and Special Collections to purchase a computer and hire a graduate assistant. RDVA Archivist J. William Keithan assisted in promoting the grant and providing key concepts for the arrangement of the records. The development of the RDVA collection continues as a collaborative effort between the RDVA and the University Libraries. The RDVA records are divided into ten series: World War I, World War II, Dachau, National RDVA, RDVA Chapters, RDVA Memorial Foundation, RDVA Auxiliary, Individual Papers, Audio/Visual, and Oversize Folders. The materials document the activities and history of the 42nd Rainbow Division and the Rainbow Division Veterans Association from 1917 to 1999. The WWI and WWII series consist of items created or collected by Rainbow Division soldiers during the conflicts and items that document the war but were created many years later. Items within the series include military orders, unit histories and rosters, poetry, correspondence, and newspaper clippings. The Dachau series contains items collected to assist in proving that the 42nd Division assisted in the liberation of Dachau Concentration Camp. Within this series are stories collected for the publication of the book Dachau 29 April 1945. The RDVA National Association and Chapter series contain national and chapter minutes, reunion programs, constitutions, and scrapbooks. Series six comprises correspondence, newsletters, and records created by the National Auxiliary and auxiliary chapters. The Memorial Foundation series includes information on the creation of the Muskogee Memorial at Camp Gruber in Okalahoma. Series eight, individual papers, includes the personal papers or assembled collections of men who served in the 42nd Rainbow Division of the U. S. Army in both world wars. The bulk of the Audio/Visual series includes the audio recordings of the mid-year and annual meetings of the national RDVA as well as films and videocassette recordings. The oversize materials include photographs, awards, certificates, and maps of battlefields and selected U.S. Navy War maps of the Pacific Ocean, South China Sea, North Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea. Amidst the rush by America to mobilize, individual states competed with each other for the honor to be the first to send their National Guard units to fight in the trenches of Europe. To check the negative implications of this competition and to minimize the impact the mobilization could have upon any one state, the government decided to create a division composed of hand picked National Guard units from 26 states and the District of Columbia. As a result of this unified effort, the 42nd Infantry Division was born in August and organized in September 1917 at Camp Mills on Long Island, New York Colonel Douglas MacArthur, who had been instrumental in the forming of the Division, said shortly after its completion. "The 42nd Division stretches like a Rainbow from one end of America to the other." The 42nd Division arrived in France in November 1917 and entered the front line in March 1918, where it remained in almost constant contact with the enemy for 174 days. During it's time in France, the 42nd Division participated in six major campaigns and incurred one-out-of-sixteen casualties suffered by the American Army during the war. The 42nd Division's service officially came to and end in May 1919. ------------------------------------------- OFFICIAL ROSTER WORLD WAR I HARRY KNUPKE #93032 R.F.D. 1, Sandusky, O NG Sandusky, O. Through the kindness of E. C. Sprau the White Star cottage was put at their disposal and when they arrived they found it beautifully decorated in the club colors, red and white. "Welcome to the Business Girls" in large letters greeted them as they approached the cottage and the roomy screened-in porch with its chairs and tables proved an ideal place for a picnic luncheon. Many of the girls brought bathing suits and enjoyed a dip before the supper was served, while others sat out on the beach and enjoyed the breeze and sunset. A fine luncheon was enjoyed, and was prepared by the supper committee including Miss Lillian Gilbert, chairman. Miss LIllian Gilbert, chairman, Miss Minnie Barnett, Miss Caroline Boysen, Miss Sara Atkinson and Miss Hilda Reark. Miss Sara Hottenroth was general chairman for the picnic. A feature of the affair was the presentation to the honor guest, Miss Cora Knupke, a purse raised by the organization. Miss Knupke, whose marriage to the Rev. Carl Doermann of Blue Island, Ill., will take place Sept. 1, at the Zion Lutheran Church, will leave later with her husband to do mission work in India. Attractive arrangements of summer blossoms in baskets and bases formed a delightful setting for the pretty frocks of the guests. The honor guest was presented with many handsome pieces of linen. The hostess arranged an evening of delightful social diversions for the pleasure of her guests and a peanut contest afforded a lot of fun for the young ladies. Miss Irene Buoy carried away high honors. Each young lady wrote the bride-to-be a letter which was dated sometime after September 15 and these will be read during her voyage to India. The hostess, Miss Albert, read a clever "Prophecy" which included each of the guests present and suggested what might occur in the life of each one in seven years when Rev. and Mrs. Doermann will return for their first leave of absence. A feature of the evening was the reading of a very interesting letter which was received by Miss Knupke's fiance's mother, from a missionary friend and her husband who are in India. They told of their experiences of one year in India and they are looking forward to the arrival of Rev. Mr. Doerman and his bride. Rev. and Mrs. Doerman will leave for India the latter part of September where Rev. Doerman has accepted a call to Madras presidency. Later in the evening a delicious luncheon of pretty appointments was served at small tables and covers were laid for the following: The Misses Elsie and Louise Kautz, Hermine Knerr, Irene Buoy, Meta Steffen, Millie Steinert, Esther Knupke, Clara Arheit, Gladys Griswold, Viola Bing, Pauline Schlottag, Helen Seebach, Nona Seebach, Ruth Albert, Mrs. Albert, the honor guest and the hostess. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- STAR JOURNAL, SANDUSKY OHIO, AUGUST 4, 1921 SEWING CLUB ENTERTAINED Miss Cora Knupke, bride-elect, was again honored at a pretty informal affair on Wednesday evening when Miss Clara Arheit was hostess to the members of her weekly sewing club at her residence on Taylor St. The young ladies spent the early evening hours sewing on linen articles for the bride-to-be, after which they were invited to the dining room where Miss Arheit served a delicious luncheon of pretty appointments. Following the service of the luncheon the club members presented Miss Knupke with a beautiful lingerie outfit. The young ladies who enjoyed the affair included the Misses Millie Steinert, Pauline Schlettag, Hermina Knerr, Irene Bouy, Marie Hein, Esther Knupke, Cora Knupke and the hostess. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- STAR JOURNAL, SANDUSKY, OHIO, AUGUST 18, 1921 WEDDING OF UNUSUAL INTEREST A wedding which will be of great interest to all who have the privilege of knowing the bride-elect, is that of Miss Cora Knupke, daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. Charles Knupke of Taylor St. and Rev. The future Rev. and Mrs. Doerman will take up work in the Mission Field in India. Miss Knupke is beloved by all who know her and her beauty of face manifests the beauty of her character. The Business Girls club of which the bride is a member, will attend the wedding, a block of seats being reserved for the members. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- STAR JOURNAL, SANDUSKY, OHIO, AUGUST 23, 1921 MARRIAGE LICENSES Carl M. Doermann, 25, pastor, Chicago, and Cora C. Knupke, 23, Sandusky, Rev. T. J. C. Stellhorn. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ STAR JOURNAL, SANDUSKY, OHIO, AUGUST 25, 1921 KNUPKE-DOERMAN NUPTIALS TO BE A BRILLIANT EVENT THURSDAY AUG 25 Zion Lutheran church will be the scene of one of the most beautiful and interesting weddings of the season, Thursday evening, when Miss Cora C. Knupke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Knupke, of Taylor St. becomes the bride of Rev. Carl M. Doerman, son of Rev. and Mrs. M. F. Doerman of Blue Island, Ill. As the climax to a romance which began when the Capitol University Glee club sang in this city several years ago, the wedding will be of unusual interest, joining as it does, the lives of two young people who have consecrated themselves to mission work in far away India. At six o'clock the strains of the Lohengrin bridal march will fill the church edifice, rendered by the Zion Lutheran organist, Mr. Wiechert, and just preceding the entrance of the bridal party Miss Irene Bouy, a close friend of the bride, will sing "Because" by Guy D'Hardelot. Little Vera Doerman, a sister of the groom, as flower-girl, will lead the party to the alter, and she will be dressed in the daintiest of white organdie and carry a basket of pink and pale yellow blossoms. Miss Anna Albert and Miss Esther Knupke, the latter a sister of the bride, will act as bridesmaids and Miss Albert will wear an exquisite pink organdie gown and carry pale yellow roses tied with a scarf of pale pink tissue. Miss Knupke has chosen pale yellow organdie for her gown and her flowers will be pale pink and yellow, with a scarf of these shades. Arthur Knupke and Gerhardt Doerman will act as groomsmen. The bride, whose beauty of face is emphasized by the beauty of character which has won her so many friends, will wear an exquisite bridal robe of white over which will be hung a slip of embroidered net. Her veil will be caught to her hair with orange blossoms and her bridal bouquet is to be shower effect of white roses tied with silver and white tissue. The nuptial rites will be solemnized by the Rev. Theo. J. C. Stellhorn of Zion Lutheran Church, and the Rev. M. F. Doerman, the father of the groom will preach the sermon. The ushers include Conrad Traut, Albert Arheit, Elmer Grulich and Edw. Tigges. The Mendelssohn wedding march will be used as a recessional for the bridal party and will be brilliantly played by Mr. Wiechert. Following the ceremony the bridal party and the immediate relatives will be guests at a wedding supper served at the home of the bride's parents and the color scheme of pink and yellow will be used in the decorating of the tables. At a later hour Rev. and Mrs. Doerman will leave for a short wedding trip and will return for the farewell service arranged for them Sunday evening at Zion Lutheran Church. Out of town guests at the wedding include the Rev. and Mrs. Doerman and daughters Vera, Doris and Regina and son Gerhardt, the Misses Doerman, cousins of the groom, all from Blue Island, Ill.; the Misses Dapper, of Crestline; Mrs. M. Siebold of Ft. Wayne, Ind., an aunt of the groom and the Rev. and Mrs. Schwann of Columbus. In September Rev. and Mrs. Doerman will leave for India, where the groom has accepted a call to the Madras Presidency. The bride has been an active member of Zion Lutheran church, and her influence has been far reaching. She has been a loyal member of the Business Girls club and shortly before her marriage gave up her position with the Erie Cord and Tire company. The good wishes of hosts of friends go with these young people for their future happiness and success. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Star Journal, Sandusky, Ohio, September 27, 1921 ......................A feature of the evening was the opportunity given the club members to speak with Mr. and Mrs. Carl Doermann who leave in two weeks for India, who spent a half hour as guests.
