The name Junkin was changed between 1877 and 1907 to Jenkins by John Junkin or James Junkin of Little Ballymena,Straid,Co Antrim N. Ireland. The Junkin family lived, and Jenkins family still live in the Ballynure, Straid, Raloo and Carrickfergus areas of Co Antrim. The Junkin Family were Presbyterian farmers and some of the Jenkins Family still carry on this tradition. It is assumed that the Junkin family came to Carrickfergus in the early 1600's from Scotland and settled in the immediate area to farm.
Most popular christian names are; John, Samuel, James, Robert, David, Mary, Margaret and Jane. There is also a strong connection with the Hall and Lyle families of Raloo.
I am interested to find out the grand-parents of John Junkin born abt 1787. He married Ann Weatherup a neighbour. John died in 1871. Ann was born abt 1788 and died 1865. They lived in Straidlands Co Antrim and are buried at the old Anglican graveyard in Ballynure Co Antrim under the name Jenkins. There is a Samuel Junkin buried in the next plot and there is a possibility that he might be Johns' father.
