Merrick died in October 1862. Annie America (Americus) was born shortly before Merrick's death. In the 1870 census Sarah is the head of the family, managing the family farm with her children. She lives in the same area, with the Post Office being Jasper, but the name of her township is now Truckwheel, instead of Towndsons District. She lives next door to Martin B and Thalia Ann Mullins. Two door down the other way are Sam and Nancy Tatum, with children including Amanda, who later married Sarah's son Gus (Augustus Lafayette).

Merrick ended his life in Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee. According to information compiled by Mike Taylor, Merrick was buried in Sanderstown, Georgia. I expect he died in a hospital in Knoxville.
