 Includes NotesNotes for Josiah Barnett:
I have found few clues to the identity of the Barnett family form which Clarinda comes. Because of the factors available, it appears likely that Jacob Green's wife Susan Barnett is Clarinda's sister. I find a matching family in Illinois in 1860. This family has quite a wide geographical history. This is the best match I have found for a Barnett in the right period. Birth dates of Clarinda and Susan in this family would match the information we have for the two Green brothers, Jackson and Jacob in Indian Territory.

1860 Federal Census, Washington County, Illinois, 22 June, Ashley, page 42, Hse # 298, Fam # 270
Josiah Barnett 52 M Farmer $600 Real $200 Personal South Carolina
Sarah Barnett 38 F Missouri
Frances Barnett 19 F North Carolina
Isabella Barnett 17 F North Carolina
Z Taylor Barnett 12 F North Carolina
Clarinda Barnett 9 F Tennessee
Susan J Barnett 8 F Tennessee
Jane Gibson 13 F Illinois
Arminda Gibson 9 F Illinois
John Gibson 8 M Illinois

I have not figured out the parentage or relationship of the Gibson children in this household. The ages overlap with the ages of the Barnett children. These might be children of a brother or sister of Josiah or Sarah.

The information in this census tells us that Josiah was born in South Carolina, and his wife's family were living in Missouri before they met the Barnetts. Since the first child was born in North Carolina, it seems likely that they met in North Carolina. But you wonder why a family who were already established in the Midwest would move back east.

Josiah and Sarah had three children while they lived in North Carolina, then moved to Tennessee about 1849 or 1850. Clarinda and Susan were born in Tennessee. They then were in Illinois some time between 1852 and 1860. The Illinois-born children probably joined them in Illinois, but there is not enough information to piece together that part of the story. I have no clues to Sarah's maiden name, which would help.

From there it is easy to envision them as part of the continuing stream of families moving west through Tennessee into Arkansas and on to Indian Territory.

I have not found this family in later censuses in any state. There is a gap in many lineages in Indian Territory from 1860-1900.

Children of Josiah Barnett are:
  1. +Clarinda Barnett, b. Abt. 1851, Illinois93, 94, d. date unknown.
