The Jervis Family Home Page

Updated September 5, 2000

I'm researching the JERVIS family in the Yonkers and NYC areas of New York. I have traced back as Wm. John JERVIS (b. Dec 1849 - d. uknown). He appears in the 1900 Soundex with his wife Mary QUINN and his 4 children (Wm. John Jr., George A., Charles H. and Cecilia F.). Charles H. JERVIS appears in the 1920 census with his wife Ruth JERVIS (maiden name HASLAM) and his two children, John Haslem JERVIS and Ruth JERVIS. He resided on Cliff Street and was reported to be 38 years old at the time of the census. However, my records from the SSDI indicated that his birthdate was May 1880. I believe his death date was about July 1965. Charles was born in New York, according to the census.
I believe that his wife, Ruth HASLAM was born Jan 1889 and died August 1978. The 1920 census said that she was born in New York. Her parents were listed as Thomas Milton HASLAM and Margaret Rebecca BITTER on her Social Security Application form.

Family stories say that somehow I am related to John Bloomfield JERVIS(b. Dec 14, 1795, Huntingdon, NY - d. Jan 12, 1885, Rome, NY). He was a civil engineer, worked on various canals in New York state. He designed the Stourbridge Lion, the 1st functioning locomotive in the U.S. He founded Port Jervis, NY. I have had little success in finding personal biographies on this man. My hope is to trace down from him to my present day family. According to unverified historical sources, he was married to Cynthia BRAYTON from Western New York. She later died and he was remarried to Elizabeth R. COATES.

If you are researching or have any information on John B. JERVIS, Wm. John JERVIS, Mary QUINN, Charles JERVIS, Ruth HASLAM, Thomas Milton HASLAM, and/or Margaret Rebecca BITTER I would love to talk to you. Please email me and we can exchange information.
