Tankersleys of West Point, Cullman County, ALABAMAUpdated December 28, 2006 |
Reverend John D. and Elizabeth George Tankersley moved from Pike, or Spalding County Georgia to Cullman County Alabama in late 1888, settled on "the old Corn Road", and built a life there with their seven children. Five more children were born in Alabama. John D. served many Baptist churches on the west side of Cullman County. Judge Tankersley (my father) was only three months old when the family moved from Georgia. With a Teaching certificate earned at FLorence State Teachers College, and later at Howard College he taught several years in Cullman County. In 1913 he married Virginia Fowler, who had earned her teaching certificate at Boaz Normal School and after a few years teaching in Marshal County came to Cullman, where an Uncle lived. They met as teachers at Crooked Creek School, a one-room facility. Judge was the first principal of Crooked Creek, a school which later was moved a short distance and became West Point Consolidated School (now West Point High School).Soon after they married they bought a house and settled in West Point Community. All twelve children of Judge and Virgie attended West Point, although the older children had to go to Cullman High School to graduate. West Point graduated its first class in 1937. Seven of Judge Tankersley's children graduated there in the next twelve years. |
