Descendants of Christopher Stover

Generation No. 1

1. CHRISTOPHER1 STOVER was born 1772, and died Jul 14, 1838 in Tymochtee Twp, Crawford Co, OH. He married SARAH WHITEFALL Abt. 1798.

Notes for CHRISTOPHER STOVER:
Note 1.
Index to Servicemen of War of 1812, State of Ohio (Grave Records):
Stover, Christopher; Pvt; b. 1772; d. 18--?; [m. Sarah Whitefall]; O.R. p. 10; (1954).

Note 2.
From his military records at the National Archives in Washington D.C.:
Christopher Stover served in the War of 1812 as a Pvt. He was in
David Lists' Company 1st Regiment, Ohio Militia from July 28 1813 to September 6, 1813. He was paid $10.60 for services.

Note 3.
From Stephen R. Stover's research:
An Administrator's Bond was taken out by two of Christopher's sons, Ashford Stover and Jacob Stover, on July 16, 1838 as administrators of his estate. A bill from D. Smith shows that tobacco and pipes were purchased on July 11, 1838. From these facts we can conclude that Christopher Stover died sometime between July 11, 1838 and July 16, 1838. We can also conclude that his death was unexpected because of the number of personal items purchased shortly before his death. These items included five pounds of coffee, two pounds of tobacco, six pipes, and one vial laudanum, an early opiate.

Note 4.
Other interesting facts about Christopher and Sarah Stover from Stephen R. Stover, Salem, OR notes:
Christopher is not listed as a head of family in the Ohio census of 1820 (population 581,434), or the Ohio census of 1830 (population 937,903). This was a time of rapid growth and expansion in the United States. Ohio had 59 of its present day 88 counties formed at this time, and it is probable that he was living on his farm but because of the nature of travel, and the political disorganization inherent in frontier settlement, he was missed in both census.

They lived in Crawford County, Tymochtee Township. The section of Crawford County in which they lived eventually became Wyandot County.

They employed a servant named Susan E. Nail at the time of their death. She was paid $19 to settle the estate.

They owned 100 acres of land in Section 26, Township 1, Range 14. This farm was valued at $226.00 and the estate paid property taxes of $3.62 on November 25, 1839.

The estate was appraised at $450.32 and a sale of items from the estate was held August 17, 1838.

The estate included four horses, three cows, and 18 hogs.

Each heir, the deceased's children received $48.00 as their inheritance. There is no record as to how the disposition of the farm was accomplished.

Note 5.
The administrators submitted their final report to the court on March 17, 1848. The final report states that each heir was "of full age and of good and pure minds".

Cemetery: Bibler Cemetery, Sycamore, OH?

Notes for SARAH WHITEFALL:
Note 1.
From Stephen R. Stover, Salem, OR:
Sarah's death must have been sudden as she purchased, from D. Smith, 18 yards of material and ticking on July 11, 1838 and made an additional purchase on July 17, 1838. Perhaps an epidemic existed at the time as a grandson died this same summer. Further documentation on the time of deaths can be found in the list of payments from the estate. On September 17, 1838 the administrators of the estate paid John Bope $10.00 for making 2 coffins.

Note 2.
Sept 27, 1997 With the assistance of Carl A. Smart, we found Sarah, wife of Christopher Stover in the Bibler cemetery. It is my belief that Christopher and Sarah were originally buried on their property in Tymochtee Twp near BelleVernon and later moved to the Bibler Cemetery after the land was sold. The first time the land was sold to Enos Neibel, 20 feet were reserved to stay in the family forever as a burying ground. Sarah and 3 other headstones are completely different from all the other headstones in the Bibler cemetery. They are made from a different material and shape.

Directions to Bibler Cemetery:
From Bucyrus
West on 103 to Co Road 35
North on 35 to Blackburn Rd.
East on Blackburn about 100 yards

Note 3.
Have been unsuccessful in finding any Whitefalls. Perhaps Whitesall? F and s looked similar then.
There is a Thomas Whitesal noted in Montgomery Co, OH pg 37 Washington Twp. TX1810
