January 2007: I am in the process of updating the family tree, new verions will be available soon. The Internet Tree is updated but it is privatized so there is no information on living individuals. I will update this page when the new reports have been uploaded. They are getting quite large so I may have to split them.

There has not been a newsletter Winter/Spring 2004/2005. Life was busy with a daughter heavily involved in the music program in high school. Another issue cannot happen without your assistance. Your family updates are needed. Also if you have any old Bensema Family recipes to share please send them. I had a request for Dutch cookie recipes. I did find a website with some Dutch Recipes from the Dutch community in Pella, Iowa.
I am looking for a person from each branch of the family tree to be a contact person; this person would collect updates for the family tree and forward them to me. This person would also be the distributor (for lack of a better term) of the newsletter. It has become cost prohibitive for one person to manage with the rising cost of stamps plus the cost of paper and ink. Future newsletter will probably be posted in this site.

New mid-2006: There is new information in the Family Tree regarding the Netherlands ancestors. There is a link on this page for GenLias; it is a Netherlands Genealogical Database. Using it I have been able to verify some of the information contained in the family tree compiled by Hattie Huizenga Schweigert, I have also been able to add some new information. My most recent find was additional children for Roeloff ABEEN and
Albertijn GEERS. Our ancestor Geert Roelfe ABEEN was not their only child, but he was their eldest. The information comes from Parish Baptismal Records in Haren. Dates of birth are approximate since the date recorded is the baptism date. I also found some additional children for Geert Roelfe ABEEN and Elisabeth GROOTHUIS (also spelled GOOTHUIJS), this is where the last name changes, but only with the youngest son: Harm Geerts Beensema. Some records on GenLias also show Geert’s last name as BEENSEMA instead of ABEEN.
I have some more mysteries to solve-if anyone can help:
Inf. Son of John Bensema – buried in Danforth Cemetery, there are no dates; can anyone help? I have figured out this is the son of John and Carrie Bensema based on an article in the Gilman Star with Anna Bensema on her 100th Birthday. In the article she states she is one of 10 children and her five brothers and four sisters are deceased. The Hattie Huizenga Schweigert tree only listed 9 children for John and Carrie Bensema, four sons and four daughters.

Larry Bensema – Illinois Death Record (Illinois State Archives on-line), date of death is 04/15/1949 in Cook County, age is 13 hours. If anyone can supply more information it would be greatly appreciated. Death records for 1949 cannot be requested.
