Maria Louise Borum Howell
Maria Louise Borum was born November 13, 1903, in Burkeville, Virginia. She was the daughter of Charles Edmund Borum and Mildred Haynie Carter, both of whose ancestors had land grants in Virginia. The Borum land grand was in what is now Mathews County dated in the early 1730's.The Carter land grant was near Christ Church, dated in the late 1660's.
Louise, educated in local schools, completed her education at Mary Washington College. She moved to Amherst County and made her home with her Mother's sister, Mrs. Thomas Whitehead, nee Sally Carter of Mountain View in the Town of Amherst. She taught in a one room school and delighted her children with stories of "dress codes" of the day and building fires early so that the room would be warm.
While teaching school she met her future husband John Vincent Howell, Sr., (Jack) who was in the cattle business and living at his family home, Athlone Farm. They were married on June 1, 1924 and she moved with him to Athlone.Six children were born to Jack and Louise, Mary Louise, John, Jr. (Jack, Jr.), Alice, Thomas (Tommy), Margaret and Robert (Rob).
While Louise was a good and loving Mother and could always be counted on to open Athlone to friends, including many a Tri-Hi-Y dance or class party, this lady of boundless energy also had time for almost any worthwhile committee or group. She was an active worker in getting the health center, museum, and a strong advocate of education. She was an active participant and worker at St. Marks Episcopal Church, Clifford. She was most active in the D. A. R., Eastern Star, and many other local civic activities. She was a mover and a shaker in these organizations, not the least of which was the Democratic Party. When her husband ran for the State Senate in the early 1950's she campaigned arduously for his election.Jack did very little campaigning and when the election was over and he had lost, there was a rumor that if Louise had run, she would have won.
In 1980 she moved to an apartment in Amherst. The winter before had been unusually hard and she had been confined to the house for weeks at a time. Her sense of humor had not deserted her.She told her children, "you don't know what a boring person you are until you live by yourself, with only yourself for a couple of weeks at a time."She enjoyed her apartment and being able to see her good friends in Amherst.
Louise Howell died in June 1989.Her beloved Athlone burned in 1995.Her daughter and son-in-law, Alice and Dick Powell have rebuilt, new Athlone, on the site and moved in Thanksgiving of 1998.It is as warm and welcoming as it was before.I know you are still watching over your children, Mother, and I'm sure you agree.

Notes for Margaret Carter Howell: "When I went to California with Aunt Jessie in the late 40's, we came back through South Dakota and visited a family named Sheridan.I do not know how they were related except through one of Daddy's aunts, either Jane or Celia. When the cold weather sets in, I'll try to go back through some of the old letters and see if I can find a reference. When I went through them the first time, I needed bifocals as a result. They write such tiny script that it is really hard to read. Also, I have somewhere a copy of a letter from Arthur Howell written in the fifties.Think he may have been great grandfather's brother's son. They lived in Alberta, Canada near Medicine Hat."
