Finding this family on this census was accidental! I was looking for the Wilkinson's. They are there, too: dwelling 4591--just "down the road apiece!" That answers the question of how James and Sarah met. The girl Emily Smith is no longer with the Rankin family.
I have a snapshot of Thomas Rankin's headstone. On the back is written "...buried right east of our farm (the Oregon homestead 12 m. so. of Corvallis) in Beulah (Cemetery). My dad perpetuates the story he had over 100 slaves on the back of this photo. According to the census of 1850, this obviously is not true.
