Hi. I'm Glenn Carroll Johnson, and I live at Sioux Falls, SD. I was born 16 September 1931 at Crooks, South Dakota.I grew up on a farm near Crooks, attended Crooks grade school, and graduated from Lyons High School, Lyons, SD, in 1949.I enlisted in the U.S. Navy on 10 July 1951 and served until retiring on 19 October 1970 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer, Yeoman (YNCS, E-8). In 1969, while stationed in Scotland, I had the opportunity to visit relatives in Sweden and Norway. After having become acquainted with many of my Scandinavian relatives and being extremely impressed by their tremendously warm welcome and hospitality, I became interested in genealogy which resulted in a lifetime hobby for me.I have created family tree lines for each of my 16 great-great grandparents; in some cases as far back as the mid-1600's.My father was born in Sweden, and my mother's parents were both born in Norway. While in the Navy, duty assignments included the Flag Allowance of the Commander in Chief, Pacific and Pacific Fleet, Pearl Harbor, TH, from 1952-1954; the minesweeper USS DOMINANT (MSO-431), homeported at Charleston, SC, from 1954-1956; the Pentagon, Washington, DC, in the Navy Office of Information, from 1956-1960; the destroyer USS WADLEIGH (DD-689), homeported at Newport, RI, from 1960-1961; the U.S. Naval Station, Rota, Spain, from 1962-1964; the destroyer USS JOHNSTON (DD-821), homeported at Charleston, SC, from 1964-1965; Joint Task Force Two of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Sandia Base, NM, from 1965-1968; and the submarine tender USS SIMON LAKE (AS-33), homeported at Holy Loch, Scotland, from 1968-1970.In 1961 I attended the Naval Justice School, Newport, RI, where I qualified as a closed microphone court reporter.Earlier in 1961, while aboard USS WADLEIGH, I participated in the United States' first attempt into outer by astronaut Alan Shephard. After retirement from the Navy, I purchased a home in Sioux Falls and was employed by the City as Secretary, Fire Department (1971-1975).I then returned to my family farm home west of Crooks, SD, in December 1975 to tend my aging father.During this time I held a position as Bailiff in Circuit Court, Second Judicial District, Sioux Falls, SD; and also raised chickens, ducks, and geese on the farm. After my father's death in 1980, I purchased a different home in Sioux Falls, and from 1989-1991 I was Postmaster of the Campus Mail Room, Augustana College. I have been a lifetime member of Benton Lutheran Church, Crooks, SD.I am or have been a member of the Norse Glee Club for 14 years (and served as Recording Secretary and Corresponding Secretary); Gjøa Lodge of the Sons of Norway (as Vice President, Financial Secretary, Social Director, Cultural Director, Editor of the Newsletter, and other offices); Veterans of Foreign Wars; the American Legion; the Sioux Valley Genealogical Society; the Leikarring Folk Dancers; the Center for Active Generations; and other organizations. In addition to genealogy, some other hobbies include Hardanger stitchery and quilting; bowling, singing, and gardening; playing for personal enjoyment on the Lowrey organ; and watching baseball, especially the Minnesota Twins major league games. I have enjoyed learning the computer. I danced with the folk dance group, the Viking Leikarring, for 20 years which performed at many, many nursing homes and area events. In 1999 I had a role in the Worthing dinner theater play "Squabbles".In 2000 I was chairman of the Lyons High School reunion committee and published a school history book for the occasion. | |
