Christian Michael Funck
Christian Funck died Tuesday morning at 1 o'clock at his home on East Sixth Avenue.He was brought home last Friday from the Mayo Brother's hospital, in Rochester, Minn. where he underwent an operation for cancer of the stomach a little over a week ago.Since coming home his condition had been alarming, and his death was expected.Last February Mr. Funck was taken sick, and although he continued in active business life, his health was broken.A few weeks ago, after receiving medical advice, he decided on an operation and on December 12 was taken to the hospital.
Christian Funck was born in Bornholm, Denmark, March 14, 1853.He grew to manhood in his native village, and there learned the bakery business.In 1874 he came to America, and located in southern Illinois, where he worked at his trade until 1878, when he came to kansas.He lived for six years on a farm in the northeast part of the state, and after his marriage in Kansas City to Miss Petrea Petersen, in 1884, the family came to Emporia.For a number of years Mr. Funck was the proprietor of the Funck hotel, near the Katy station, and after quitting the hotel business, he devoted all of his time to his produce house.By industry and good management he built up a big business and acquired a considerable fortune.A few years ago he erected a beautiful home east of the old hotel location and had since lived there.He was a member of the Red Men's lodge, which organization will have charge of the funeral services at the grave.
Besides his wife he leaves two children, a daughter, Miss Nellie, and one son , Vigo, both of whom live at home.Two sisters, Mrs. Nels Munson and Mrs. S.P. Rasmussen, live in Emporia; Mrs. Maggie Nelson in California, and two other sisters in Denmark.
Funeral services will be in the Lutheran Church this afternoon at 1:30.The services will be conducted by Rev. Carl G. Aue, and the interment will be made in Maplewood.
He also leaves three children by a former marriage.Mrs. Gurta Broadbent, Corning, Mrs. Amelia Hoffman, Long Beach, Charles Funk, Corning, Ks. And seven grandchildren.
