Thomas Amis was a French Huguenot who settled in Upper Norfolk County, (now Chesapeake County) Virginia in 1693. He emigrated from France with two brothers. All of the brothers were members of the Nansemond Colony of Huguenot (now Suffolk County). Thomas Amis received a land grant in Glouchester County, VA, in 1678 and John Amis (a brother) a grant in Essex County, VA 1702 (unsure of date).
Land in Gloucester County was granted on November 20, 1678. He received 295 acres.."down the maine runn of Dragon Swamp & adjoining the remaining Lands of Samuel Patridge dece'd now claimed by Mr. John Carver by purchase & adjoining Roger Shackelford, William Norman, Chalres Roane. There are notes of a Dunkin BOHONO & Jno. MECHEN who were deeded 220 acres in Gloster Co., unpon the head of the E. most River in Mockjack Bay on the 20th Dec. 1667. Trans. 4 persons: Thomas Amis, John Blan Roger Shackleford, John Thomas. I do not know if this is the same Thomas Amis.
There are also nots of 47 acres in Rappahanock Ctr deeded to Jno. Amis on South side of the river on 23 Oct. 1690 Beginning on Jno. Meader's Cr; along Jno. Gray; to Wm. Clapham; crossing part of the old feild & c. Imp. of Peter John.
