My GGgrandmother, Mary Anna Riddle, was born June 17, 1862 in Nelson Co., Kentucky. She was married to Richard Dennis Purcell in 1882 and died on May 8, 1938 in Taylor Co., Kentucky. Her family background was quite interesting. Her mother, Elizabeth Jane Norris, was from a slave holding Catholic family near Culvertown in Nelson Co., KY. Her father, George Riddle, was half Irish, in religion a protestant and was a true Yankee having came to Kentucky from Butler Co., Pennsylvania. Odd as it may seem for the time period in which she lived, my Grandfather says that Mary, his grandmother, was an avid hunter. My Grandfather's sister well recalls the beautiful flowers, particularly roses, that her grandmother grew.
