Martha Hay McGavock was born 1830 in Wythe County, Virginia, the daughter of Hugh McGavock and Elizabeth Hay. Her father relocated to what became Larue County, Kentucky when she was a baby, settling on a 1400 acre land grant he had heired. In 1846 Martha was married to Jeremiah Morris (1822-1903) my GGGgranduncle. Jeremiah was the son of John Morris and Susannah Thorpe. About 1854 Jeremiah Morris resigned his office as coroner of Taylor County, Kentucky and with his wife and children and his 72 year old mother, relocated to Linn County, Missouri where he had an older brother, Thomas Morris, already living. Jeremiah was a Confederate soldier serving in Company K of the 2nd Missouri Volunteer Infantry, CSA. The family later moved to Oregon.
