It was told that Jesse James ate at this table. I have no evidence and it is probably not so. The house consisted of one large log "pen", partitioned inside into a small hallway with rooms on either side. A "dogtrot" on the rear of the house connected it to a kitchen. Walter was killed near "The Big Rock" on Otter Creek on 5 October 1925 by his nephew, Andy Brewer. It was said that the two had some sort of disagreement over some bootleg whiskey but exact details of the event are unknown to me. I have been to the location of the murder several times. Several men were gathered near the creek bank playing poker and indulging in liquor when the murder occurred.

  • Unknown - Lavina Hackley or Ruth Phillips (25 KB)
A lady, whose name I have forgotten, (perhaps a McKnight) shared this photo with me some years ago. The photograph is of the grandmother of Samuel B. Hackley (1877-1943) who was Mayor of Campbellsville around the 1930s. Unfortunately, it was not known whether it was his paternal grandmother, Lavina Jarboe Hackley, wife of R. D. Hackley, or his maternal grandmother, Rutha P. Eades Phillips, wife of Nathan Donaldson Phillips. The latter, Mrs. Phillips is my GGGGgrandmother. I would much like to positively identify this as either Lavina or Rutha. Mrs. Hackley was born around 1816 and died sometime in the 1870s. Rutha was born in 1819 and died in 1902.

There are only three graves in the cemetery and all three stones are fallen. The stone to farthest left in the top photo is the monument of Greenberry Skaggs (1848-1875) s/o Richard & Jensey. Next is the monument of Jensey "Jane" Martin Skaggs and to the far right the grave of Richard Skaggs Sr. A small stone wall surrounds the graves of Richard and Jane.
  • Henry Johnson Family Cemetery (184 KB)
These four photographs are of the Henry Johnson Family Cemetery near Mac in Taylor County. The top two photos were taken this Spring (2006). The lower photos were taken in early 2004 before I was allowed to clean the cemetery up. The previous land owner wasn't very nice and the lady acutally wielded a machine gun at my brother and I the day the two bottom photographs were taken. They have since sold the place to a person who allowed me to clean the cemetery off, restore the fallen tombstones and put a fence around it.
  • Owens - Skaggs - Warren - Milby House, Green Co. (114 KB)
This large brick Federal Style house was built by Nathaniel Owens around, or before, the year 1800. He was one of Green County KY's wealthiest planters and a large slave owner. His daughter, Mary, refused Abraham Lincoln's proposal of marriage. Owens died in the 1840s and his son, John Y. Owens, got the house, known as Lashfield, and 450 acres around it. He, in 1851, sold the 450 acres and "mansion house" to my GGGgrandfather, Richard Skaggs (1801-1891). Richard moved his family there from Taylor County in 1852 and remained there until early 1856 when he came back to Taylor County. He sold off portions of the farm to James A. Howell and Lewis B. Skaggs while living there. The house and remaining 389 acres was sold to Rev. Hezekiah C. Warren around 1856. By the 1890s the house and land had passed to the hands of the Alexander Milby family. Unfortunately, this old home was torn down in the 1960s. It has been said that it was the largest home in antebellum Green and Taylor County. This photograph was taken by a member of the Warren family before the house was torn down.
  • Owens House (57 KB)
This is a photograph of the Owens / Skaggs / Warren / Milby House in northern Green Co., KY near Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. My GGGgrandfather, Richard Skaggs, owned this house and lived here in the early 1850s. This photograph taken in the early 1900s when the Milbys lived there. This photo courtesy of Barbara Dewitt Webster, G-granddaughter of Alexander Milby.
  • William T. Johnson, early 1860s (68 KB)
This photograph is of William T. Johnson (1837-1864). He was brother to my GGgrandfather, Louis Johnson. They were sons of Henry Johnson and Elizabeth Morris. William T. married Caroline Despain who was a granddaughter of Richard Skaggs and Jensey "Jane" Martin. According to family legend, William died while trying to save his father's horse from "Yankees" during the Civil War. He was being chased and caught his neck in a grapevine and was killed, whether from the fall or frome being shot, I do not know. He died 5 January 1864 in Taylor County, Kentucky.
  • R. D. Purcell, 1882 (28 KB)
A textbook example of what not to let happen to your old photographs. This was the 1882 wedding photo of my GGgrandparents, R. D. Purcell and Mary Anna Riddle. Unfortunately, at some point, someone has spilled black ink all over part of the picture, covering most of Mary's face.
  • Barbara Jean Wayne - May 1931 (39 KB)
My grandmother, Barbara Jean Wayne, taken May 1931, Taylor County, Kentucky.
  • Solomon Skaggs house, Maple, KY (67 KB)
The log house pictured was likely built by Uncle Solomon Skaggs (1803-1868) around 1830. This house sets near the Old Zion Separate Baptist Church and cemetery which was founded by Solomon at Maple, Taylor Co., Kentucky. He was a farmer, miller and preacher. He is three times my "way back uncle" as I descend directly from three of his siblings, Matilda Skaggs Stillwell, John Dover Skaggs and Elizabeth Skaggs Price. When Solomon died the portion of his farm including this house and his mill, which sat in the creek in front of the house, went to his son, King Solomon Skaggs (1848-1920). King Solomon married my GGGgrandaunt, Mary Jane Allen, d/o Wm. Jefferson Allen and Elizabeth Pickerell. After King Solomon Skaggs died the house and land eventually passed into the hands of Waller "Walter" Shofner and wife, Bessie Skaggs Shofner. In the 1930s the Shofner's used this house as a tenant house and my Great-Grandparents, John Raymond Dotson and Nancy Ellen Price lived there for a while in the early 1930s when they were first married.. My grandmother, Estelene Dotson Stillwell, was born in the house in 1933. There are three other rooms of frame construction added "end-to-end" on the right hand side of the house. The farthest right room had a large stone chimney and fireplace so the frame rooms were built on to the earlier log section very early on, probably before the Civil War. At some point, a stone chimney which heated the log section was removed from the left hand end of the log house.
  • Members of the Dotson, Pickerell and Morris Family (276 KB)
Members of the Dotson, Pickerell and Morris family gathered in front of the John Louis Morris home in the Levelwoods area of Larue Co., Kentucky in the early 1900s. The gentleman seated near the farthest left porch column is believed to be Benjamin Franklin Morris (1864-1952), s/o Wm. H. Morris and Perfectua Pickerell, a grandson of Cornelius Morris of Taylor County. The lady standing on the porch farthest to the right is his wife, Nancy Catherine Pickerell (1873-1949) daughter of Stephen Pickerell and Nancy Jane Roberts Ball. The younger lady standing in the center of the photograph, between the two gentleman I believe to be Emily Jane Pickerell (1871-1924), wife of William Holland Dotson. I cannot identify anyone else. This photograph was in the collection of photographs belonging to my GGgrandmother, Rebecca Jane Dotson (1872-1934). Her grandmother was Elizabeth Pickerell Allen but my research has not connected her family with this Pickerell family although they did live in the same area. However, my GGgrandmother was briefly married to a Eugene Morris in the early 1900s. I know nothing about his family but believe he must be a part of this family and is perhaps how Rebecca came to possess the photo. This was the home of John Louis Morris and Nora Jane Gaddie. John Louis was distantly related to Ben Morris and the families lived adjoining each other in the Levelwoods area. John Louis Morris was a son of John T. Morris and Rutha Jane Hash and was a great-grandson of Henry Johnson and Elizabeth Morris, my GGGgrandparents.

Her family background was quite interesting. Her mother, Elizabeth Jane Norris, was from a slave holding Catholic family near Culvertown in Nelson Co., KY. Her father, George Riddle, was half Irish, in religion a protestant and was a true Yankee having came to Kentucky from Butler Co., Pennsylvania. Odd as it may seem for the time period in which she lived, my Grandfather says that Mary, his grandmother, was an avid hunter. My Grandfather's sister well recalls the beautiful flowers, particularly roses, that her grandmother grew.
