Originally called Podarces, his life was spared at the request of Hesione -- on the condition that Podarces first be a slave and then be redeemed by Hesione. Hesione gave her veil for him; hence his name of Priam (Greek for "to buy"). After gaining his freedom, Priam first married Arisbe and then Hecuba, who bore him 50 sons and 12 daughters. Besides these he had at least 42 other children by concubines. His only son to survive the Trojan War was Helenus.
Killed at the end of the Trojan War, usually given as 1183/4 BC, but, according to the Compendium of World History, 1181 BC.
