Jacob was an old hunter, and followed that occupation in Kentucky, where bears were so numerous that people could hardly keep their hogs, and had to pen them up. Mr. Johnson, early one morning, was aroused by the squealing of some hogs, and suddenly started out in pursuit of the bear. He followed the noise, and soon found the object of his search. The bear was biting and cuffing the hog, which he held up, but on seeing the hunter he fled. Mr. Johnson, knowing the bear would soon return, secreted himself behind a log, and shortly after bruin came back and perched himself with his fore feet on the log, snuffing around, upon which the hunter shot him in the region of the heart. The animal was found to weigh 500 pounds. When Jacob Johnson came to Logan County, he "squatted" on 1,000 acres of land, which he occupied seventeen years. He then bought eighty-seven acres of land at $2 an acre in Rush Creek Township, which land he cleared of the timber covering it. His father's home was used as a church for twenty-five years and his house was the home of the itinerant. He was first identified with the old Clavin Baptists, and afterwards with the Methodist Church, in which he labored until his death. He died in August, 1868, and his wife preceded him, September 18, 1856. They had twelve children, ten sons and two daughters, five living.
The following information, and changes, was found at Ancestry.com (10/23/2000) and provided by e-mail address [email protected]. However, my attempt to contact this person to verify sources has been unsuccessful. The changes have been noted for future reference.
History: Jacob Johnson was born in Monmouth County, New Jersey, April 15, 1779 and died August 22, 1868, and is buried in the Old Equality Cemetery, east of Rushylvania, Ohio. His grave, together with his wife, Rachel Green Johnson, a son Philip G. and a son Rev. Morton Nelson Johnson and his wife, are on the same lot. The lot is toward the rear of the cemetery and on the west side. Jacob's father was John Johnson and his ancestors were Hollanders who came to New Amsterdam (now New York) about 1643. The mother's name was Reed. They were living in New Jersey during the Revolutionary War and the battle of Monmouth was fought near their home on June 28th, 1778. Grandfather Jacob often mentioned about his mother hearing the noise of the cannons in the battle. Jacob was, of course, born the following year. Shortly after the Revolutionary War, the family moved to Pennsylvania, where Jacob received the rudiments of an education such as they had in those days. It is interesting to note that on the marriage bond, Jacob Johnson could sign his name, while George Green Johnson only made his mark. About 1800, the family emigrated again, this time to Kentucky. They came down the Ohio River in a flat boat and landed at what is now Boone County, opposite Cincinnati, Ohio, which contained a few log cabins and a boat landing, now Covington. Jacob served his brother Andrew as an overseer of slaves. Andrew had come to Kentucky earlier and had accumulated quite an estate. This branch of the Johnson family remained in Kentucky. Lafayette Johnson, a Baptist minister from Walton, KY, came with his brother John T. Johnson for a visit among the Logan and Hardin County, Ohio relatives about 1889. Later Lafayette came to the Johnsn reunion (he was Andrew's son). Jacob had five brothers: Andrew, Peter, John T., James and William. Peter moved to Ohio. He had a son and five daughters. Two of them married Ansleys, one a Sutton, one a White and one a Mayhill. Peter bought quite a body of land in Ruskcreek Township, Logan County, Ohio and gave this to his sons and daughters. Some of it is still owned by some of the younger generations. William married and had a family of five children. He disappeared from home and was never heard from. After a year, the mother went to North Carolina, where her people lived; so there is a branch of the Johnson family in North Carolina. The three sisters married and all knowledge has been lost. A record in the Kentucky Archives says that Rebecca married John Tindall in 1799. Rachel Green, the wife of Jacob, was born June 10, 1781. She was the daughter of George R. Green, a native Englishman. He was an orphan boy and had live with an older sister. He had quite a dispute with one of the children and when she took her child's part, he turned to her and said, "You shall never see my face again". He made his way to some seaport and came to America, working to pay his passage over. He fought on the American side during the Revolutionary War. After the war, he married a Welch lady and emigrated to Fleming County, KY, of which Paris is the County seat. That is where Rachel Green was born and that is where we have the name, Paris Fleming.

A Jacob Johnson appears in the "NJ Early Census Index" for the following years; 1785, 1786, 1787, 1790, 1792, 1794, 1795, 1796, & 1806. Each entry is located in Monmouth County, Middletown Township, New Jersey, and on about the same page. Although not conclusive it may be possible that this is this family's Jacob Johnson. | Notes for Henry Green JOHNSON: Buck Township Wilson Chapel, Methodist Episcopal Church was organized, it is believed, by Elder Roberts in the schoolhouse in 1852. The first class consisted of James Richards and his wife Matilda, Leonard Richards and his wife Mary, and Henry G. Johnson and his wife Martha. History of Hardin County, 1883, Buck Township, Page 742 Henry G. Johnson, a native of Ohio [Henry was actually born in Kentucky] , settled here about 1849, and his brother Hosea one or two years later. They have ever since remained residents here, and have raised large and interesting families and are esteemed and respected citizens. Page 744, Buck Township; Trustees - 1856-1857, John Espy, Henry G. Johnson, and John Evans.....1861, George Atkinson, Addison Heath and H. G. Johnson. Henry G. & M. Johnson Family Bible; The leaf of a Gingko tree was found between the pages of the Family Bible. The page and where the leaf were discovered are interesting. Page 508, Chap. XV And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Son of man, What branch is the vine-tree more than any tree, or than a branch which is among the trees of the forest? Shall wood be taken thereof to do any work? or will men take a pin of it to hang any vessel thereon? Obituary from Kenton newspaper: DEATH of HENRY JOHNSON Henry Johnson, who for a number of years was a resident of this County, but for the past five years had resided in West Liberty answered the final summon Monday morning. He was eighty-six years old. Several children, most of whom reside in this county, are left to mourn his loss. Mr. Johnson was well and favorably known in this county and has many friends who will be sad to hear of his death. The June 1880 Census shows a Etta as a grand daughter living with the Henry Green family. Also a Joseph Snider as a servant with a girl named Maud, listed as a grand daughter under Joseph's name. Maud is aged 11. HENRY G. JOHNSON, farmer. P. O. Kenton, was born in Flaming County, Ky., April 17, 1813, and is a son of Jacob and Rachel (Green) Johnson. He is next to the youngest of the children living; was reared on his father's farm and educated in the common schools. His first schoolhouse was a log cabin, with no floors, furnished with a fire-place, slab seats and greasedpaper window lights. When sixteen years of age, he left home, going twenty-one miles to Champaign County to obtain work at $6 a month, $1 in cash and the remainder in goods. For four years he worked by the month, receiving from $6 to $9 per month; then cropped one year and worked by the job one year; after which he married, and, in 1841, bought 100 acres of land. where Rushsylvania now stands, paying $1,000. It was largely covered with timber, and he has since cleared half of the farm and lived on it seven years. He then lived on the Mays farm on the old Sandusky road, remaining there one year. He accommodated pioneer travelers, although not keeping a public house. He cleared three farms in Logan County, and on March 25, 1850, purchased his present farm of 100 acres, paying $8 an acre. In 1853, he added 103 acres, paying $6 an acre; subsequently, in 1856, he added fifty-four acres more, and is now the owner of 247 acres, 150 of which he has cleared and improved himself. He started a poor boy, and by his energy and ambition secured all he now has, and his pursuits in life have been generally successful. He has been a great reader, acquiring considerable knowledge. On April 28, 1836, he was united in marriage to Martha, daughter of Robert and Isabel (Burnsides) Smith, and a native of Logan County, Ohio, born October 10, 1813. Ten children resulted from this union, nine living, viz., Jacob R.; Isabel S., wife of J.S. Allen; Robert H.; Savilla ; Victoria, wife of Nathan Clark; Henry O., Philip G., Mary E., and Paulina, wife of Kendrick Kennedy. Mr. Johnson and his wife are, members of the M. E. Church, to which be has belonged for sixty yea-s and she for forty years. Mr. Johnson has also been a local minister for twenty-five years. In politics, he was formerly a Whig, but is now a Republican. He served as Township Trustee for eight years. Jacob R. Johnson, the eldest son of our subject; was the first to enlist in Hardin County; he responded to the call for 75,000 men, and enlisted in Company -- Fourth Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He served in the army of the Potomac, and fought at Romney. After a service of nine months, he was discharged on account of disability. He then returned home, and is now residing in Leesburg, Kosciusko Co., Ind. He was married to Margaret J.
