2. THOMAS² JOINES (EZEKIEL¹) was born Abt. 1750, and died January 1834 in ,Wilkes Co., NC. He married MARY CAUDILL.

Notes for THOMAS JOINES:
The first record of Thomas Joines in Northwestern North Carolina is
the 1778 Tax List of Rowan County. The same list that his father Ezekiel
is recorded in. Thomas is listed as Thomas Jines living in Capt. Johnston's
District.(Doc# 164)

Thomas Joines' name was misspelled several different ways in the records,
including Join, Jines, Gines, Goin, Goins, Gaines, and Jones.
To make matters worse there was probably a Thomas Gaines/Goines/Goins who lived
in Surry or Stokes County. There are Goines families that still live in
Surry County. (Doc# 167,168) Thomas Gaines of Stokes Co. died in 1811 leaving a
Will which was entered in Stokes County.(Doc# 165) The names of Richard
Gaines, James Gaines, William Gaines, and George Gaines appear in the records
of Surry and Wilkes County during this time period. Their names were
sometimes misspelled as Goins or Joines. They were all sons of Thomas
Gaines of Stokes County, as named in his Will. Other names that appear
to be related to the Thomas Gaines family are Joseph (Doc# 166), Henry
of Newberry County, South Carolina (Doc# 88)

The first land entry that I have found that mentions a person who could
have been Thomas Joines was on the 14th of September 1778 when William
Hill entered 100 Acres on the Great Elkin River in Wilkes County that
joined the lands of Thomas Goins.(Doc# 86) If this is Thomas Joines then
he owned land in Wilkes County prior to the 14th of September 1778.
During the years 1778, 1779, and 1780 Thomas Goins/Gains entered eight different
deeds in Wilkes County which amounted to about six hundred acres of land.
(Doc# 86) These lands were located on the Great Elkin, the Big Elkin
Creek, The East Fork of the Roaring River, or the North East Prong Branch.

Thomas Joines was a Revolutionary War Veteran, proven by the Revolutionary
War Pension Application of Jasper Billings. In this application Jasper
Billings describes the tour of duty in which he fought at the Battle of
Eutaw Springs, near Camden, South Carolina. In this application Thomas
Jines (Joines) swears in court that he was with Jasper Billings during
this tour of duty and that he fought at the Battle of Eutaw Springs.

In the book, THE JOURNAL AND ORDER BOOK OF CAPTAIN ROBERT KIRKWOOD OF
THE DELAWARE REGIMENT OF THE CONTINENTAL LINE, PART 1 " A JOURNAL OF THE
SOUTHERN CAMPAIGN"; Edited by Rev. Joseph Brown Turner and published by
Kennikat Press of Port Washington, NY and London in 1970, Captain Kirkwood
describes the Battle of Eutaw Springs. His description is very much like
that of Jasper Billings description of the same battle. Captain Kirkwood
states that there were 6 North Carolina Militia soldiers killed wit h 31
being wounded and 8 missing. It has been passed down through the Joines
family that Thomas had a brother, Major Joines, that was killed at the
Battle of Eutaw Springs. ( Doc# 191 )

In the 1784 - 1787 Census of Wilkes County Thomas Joines is listed as
having one male and five females in his household. This was probably Thomas, his wife Mary, and their first four daughters.(Doc# 90,192)

In the 1790 Census of Wilkes County Thomas is listed as having two males
and seven females in his household. This could have been himself, one son,
his wife, and six daughters all born before 1790.(Doc# 82) Thomas' first
son is believed to have been Major Joines who was born in 1793. Who
was the male child living in Thomas' household in 1790?

In the 1795 Tax List of Wilkes County Thomas is listed in Capt. Johnson's
district owning hundred acres and having one poll. In the 1797 Tax list
of Wilkes County he is listed in Capt. Hammons district still owning
100 acres and having one poll.(Doc# 94) In the 1800 Tax List of Wilkes
County he is again listed in Capt. Johnson's District owning
one hundred and forty acres of land.(Doc# 93)

In the 1800 Census of Wilkes County Thomas is listed as having three young
males, three females which includes his wife, and himself living in
his home. These three young males were probably Major who was born about
1793, Moses who was born about 1798, and Ezekiel who was born about 1800.

In 1808 Thomas Joines purchased one hundred acres on Harrison Creek of
the Roaring River. (Doc# 82)

In the 1810 Census of Wilkes County Thomas is listed along with his wife,
their four sons, and two of their daughters. (Doc# 82)

Thomas Joines continued to live in Wilkes County, North Carolina until
the time of his death in January of 1834. Thomas Joines' Estate papers are
located in the North Carolina State Archives, Wilkes County

151)

Lydia's husband, Edmund, married his second wife, Nancy Tackett, in
Floyd County, Kentucky April 16th, 1835.(Doc# 280) This indicates
that Lydia died before that date.
