William H. Joines (b. October 1828)

1st Lieut. Co. I,61st Reg. NC troops per Confed. records.
William H. Joines joined the Confederate Army on 3 May 1862 in Allegh any
County, North Carolina. He enrolled in Aras B. Cox's Co., Partisan Ra ngers,
North Carolina Volunteers.(Doc# 203)
This Company was successively designated as Captain Cox's Company, Pa rtisan
Rangers, North Carolina Voluteers; Company G, 59th Regiment North Car olina
Infantry (State Troops), and Company I, 61st Regiment North Carolin a Infantry
(State Troops).
The 61st Regiment North Carolina Infantry (State Troops) was organized
about September, 1862, with ten companies. A to K, which had previous ly
served as independent companies.
This Company of Volunteers were tendered to Colonel Vance, of the 26th
North Carolina Regiment of State Troops, who was authorized by the Se cretary
of War to raise a Legion, and accepted by him on the 9th day of May , 1862,
and ordered to the Camp of Instruction at Kittrell Springs, North Car olina.
The Legion now being completed, and abandoned by Colonel Vance, was a pplied
to the Secretary of War for a position in another Corps of the Confed erate
States Army, and at the request of Brigadier General Williams they we re, as
a Company of Partisan Rangers, ordered, on the 7th day of August, 186 2, by
the Secretary of War to proceed to General Williams' Brigade and repo rt to
him for service. It retained at Petersburg by order of General Hill a waiting
further orders, August the 12th, 1862.
This Company later became part of Clingman's Brigade.
In early 1863 William H. Joines was listed as being sick in the C.S.A.
General Military Hospital, No. 4, Wilmington, North Carolina. He wa s returned
to duty March 9th, 1863.
In an order issued from the Headquarters of Company I, 61st Regimen t issued
on the 18th of November 1863, it states that William H. Joines was o n leave
and in Alleghany County, North Carolina searching for desserters. H e had
reported that he had captured several and stated that if he had mor e time
he could capture more. His leave was extended for 12 days.
William H. Joines was promoted to Sergeant and to 2nd Lieutenant on t he
24th of June 1863. He was listed on the "Roll of Honor" later in 1863.
William H. Joines was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on the 9th of June 1 864.
William H. Joines became sick with dysenteria in June of 1864 and was
in General Hospital No. 4, Richmond, Virginia.
On November 16th 1864 William was in Alleghany County, North Carolina
and sent a letter of resignation to Company I, 61st Regiment.
"General, I hereby respectfully tender the reignation of my commission
as 1st Lieutenant of Company I, 61st Regiment N.C., Troops and pray t hat
you accept it for the following reasons. That my usefulness in my Com pany
has been destroyed by reason of bad health . I therefore think it a d uty
that I owe to my Company & Country to tender this my resignation. If I
should regain my health & become able I will rejoin the service again
immediatly. Hoping that this may meet the approval of my superiors in
command and your earliest attention. I am general very respectfully y our
obedient servant, (signed) Wm. H. Joines 1st Lieut. Co. I, 61st NCI"
Two doctors from Alleghany County sent a letter with this resignatio n stating
that they had examined William H. Joines. That he was thirty-six year s old
that he had fair complextion, blue eyes, and light hair. They state d that
William was suffering from a disease of the heart and that they belie ved
it was a permenent condition. This letter was signed by Doctor Long a nd

"Will to wife Candis Joines, furniture, livestock, and property.
Will to James H. Joines' children; Mack Joines fifty-five dollars,
and one hundred dollars to Charly, Blanch, Frank, Elsa, and James.
Will that upon death of wife remaining property be divided int thre e parts.
One third going to Francis Wagoner, one third to P.J. Wagoner, and on e third
