Letter from Nephew T. E. Yates dated August 15, 1874, Philadelphia, MS

Dear Uncle, Aunt and Family,

This leaves us all able to be up. My health is as good as it is usually, always bad. I haven't seen a day of good health since the war. Am not able to work though I did work some in the spring. Mother is here with us in usual health. She is ll around among us her children that are here. Myself, Andrew, George and Matt are in about one and one half miles of each other abd she goes around when she likes. Brother Jim is about 8 miles from here. Sis is in Meridian. Sis Frances and Bro William in Texas. Our children are all with us yet that are living except the two that are married. One of them is living here in town. The other in Hickory Station 35 miles from us. Four thats with us are grown. The youngest one is 9 years old. He has a very bad rising(sp) on his thigh. He is making so much fuss I can hardle write. I know the little fellow is suffering so bad. Crops were never finer in this section and it"s a general thing I believe. Bro will writes if no disaster to his crops he will make more than he can gather. He is finally pleased with Texas.
Circuit Court commences here tomorrow. Our court has but very little business now in it. That speaks well of our county and we had no court last tern. If I could stand the heat I would be glad to visit you this summer but am afraid to leave home. Our oldest girl is teaching school about 4 miles from home. Comes home Friday eve and goes back Monday morning. Mother says give you all her best love and says as old and feeble as she is she would come to see you if she had anyone to come with her. She says you and Uncle Terrell could come if you would. I think so too. Starting would be the worst trouble with you. Write how Uncle Charles is getting along. We never hear from any of his folks. Only when you write. I was sorry to hear of the death of his son and to hear of his dying so suddenly. I hope his widow and children may do well. I have about 3 acres in sweet potatoes. We have a potato here. It is called the Vineles??? potato. I am trying it this year. About half Vineles?? and half yams. Fruit is nearly a failure here. We have some apples. They are very inferior. Write soon. I will close asking you to excuse this scattering letter. Give all our love to all the connections, a good portion to you and Uncle Terrell. Also to Uncle Charley. I am as ever Your Nephew until death,

Letter to Rachel Francis Oliver from Nephew T. E. Yates dated July 14, 1899
Philadelphia, MS

Dear Aunt and all,
I wrote you some time since and no answer so I will write again. We are uneasy about you. Mother says something is the matter I hope not. This leaves us all able to be up but complaining as usual. Connections well so far as I know. Though theres more sickness here than usual at this time of year. Crops generally good. Wanting rain in places and last 3 days has been showers passing about us in sight or hearing. Well aunt, I must write about a terrible fight that taken place about five miles up the same road we travelled going to the graveyard when you were here. There was a picnic at a big spring. I went thinking I would see many of my old neighbors but before I got there two young men of my old neighbors had a terrible fight. One was killed on the spot. His name is Tolbert. The other was not hurt, his name is Gamblin. When they drew their pistols, Tolbert's pistol came apart some way so the cotriges (sp?) all fell out on the ground. When he saw he had no showing he started to run and Gamblin shot him in the back. He shot three times, one ball missed and broke Henry Lee's leg near the ankle. Lee was a by-stander was wounded accidently he is my wife's cozen(sp?) and was suffering smartly when I left. The man who did the killing is here under guard, trial tomorrow. We heard from (Bula and Mzz)sp??? last week. Both have been sick but are better and able to be up. We were so sorry to hear about Uncles death. Hope you are getting along well. I want you to write me a long letter and tell me all about how you are getting along and all the children. Can't you come out and see us this summer. We would be so glad to see youl Give the children each one my love and best wishes and may God bless you all especially you my dear old Aunt in your declining years. May they be your happiest and most devoted to our God. Write as soon as you get this. Mother joins in love to you all. Lovingly your nephew,

She never got well from the time she was sick when I was out there. I received a letter from Frances stateing her an Mealson(sp?) both has been sick since Iwas out there. Was sorry to hear that they were sick but hope when these line reach you they will find you all well and doing well. I have nothing to write to you worth riting since I came home. There was aa man living with a man by the name of Abernath(sp?) . They had a fallout and Gray went to thy field where Abernath was pulling foder and demanded an acknowledgement. Abernath said he had none to make. Gray said if he didn't he would shoot him. Abernath said you have the advantage as you are armed and I ain't and went back to pulling foder and Gray shot him with 12 shot in the back. He fell so dead he held the foder in his hand. The next day Gray went out and found him and on examining they found Gray to be thy man who shot him and a company of about 150 men took him and hung him. They has been 40 murders in Pontitock and but one convicted and he was negro and they _____ had determined to take the law in there own hands. J. M. send love to all and says that he is glad to hear that Sara and Mary has got to riting and hopes that they will rite to him. Now I must clos. Love to you my dear sun and family.
