Notes for Richard Beauford:
Richard shipped from Gravesend, England in the "Elizabeth" August 1, 1635
Richard was the first of the name Beauford in Virginia. He "was examined by a minister of the Church of Christ, as to loyalty to the King, took the perscribed oath of allegiance, etc., age 18," and emigrated on the ship, "Elizabeth", August 1, 1635, from Graves End, England.
The following "fish story" concerning the voyage of the good ship "Elizabeth" has been handed down in the Buford family from generation to generation since that day:
It is said that the ship , on her way over, struck a snag and sprung a leak which threatened to sink her, and that all on board were forced to take turns bailing out the water. Suddenly, the water ceased to pour in, but it was not known until they reached shore that they knew the suction had caught a big fish, and that the pressure was so great it was held fast against the side of the ship, thus stopping the leakage andallowing the ship to land safely.
Richard Beauford was settled in LancasterCounty, Virginia, about 1656. Where he lived from the time of his arrival in Virginia up to that time is not known, but in Lancaster records, under the date of April 15, 1656, "John Vause assigned Richard Beauford three hundred acres ofland, lying on the south side of the Rappahannock River." He married the daughter of John Vause.
