This Web Page is a "Work In Progress". The Matthews family information represents years of work by my uncle Rufus H. Matthews, Jr., now deceased, and my research results. I am adding additional and confirming data, and expanding the family information. ***NOTE: SOME DATA HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM THIS SITE BECAUSE OF VIOLATIONS OF THE COPY RIGHT LAW*** The primary names being researched are JONES, MATTHEWS, DEUEL, and HOLDEN. Secondary lines are Sasser, Varnell, Dill, Blount, Christian, Wood, Kitchens, Pope, Nail, Dickinson, and Allgood.
JONES: Information indicates that Aaron Jones born about 1730, (my ggg-grandfather) of Culpepper Co. VA, Abbeville, SC, and Lincoln County GA, was the son of John Jones and Elizabeth of Brunswick Parish, King George County, VA.
MATTHEWS: An attempt to prove or disprove certain "facts" long accepted by many members of our Matthews family is now complete. The results are reported in the book "The Matthews of Moore", and are previewed on this Page. The book presents the genealogy of our Matthews line from Col. Thomas Matthews Jr., to his son James and daughter in law Nancy Dickinson, and their son Rev. Willis Dickinson Matthews down through Rufus H. Matthews, Jr., with some exciting new information regarding James, Nancy, and their other children provided. The father-son relationship of Thomas to James has also now been demonstrated and accepted by the SAR.
DEUEL: This family surname has many variations, and all must be researched in verifying if a line is connected. Deuel, Davol, Duel are only a few examples. Earl Charles Deuel, Caroyn's father will be used as the starting point for new research.
HOLDEN: Success with Carolyn's DAR membership by Abel Holden, Rev. Soldier! There is an error in the book used by many Holden researchers as a primary reference: Eben Putman's "The Holden Genealogy - ... of Richard and Justinian Holden". Volume 2, page 242: (under William Milton Holden) 2 - Frederic William but no children; instead it shows 3 - Melvin Francis with six children. These are reversed; Frederick William married Margaret Hoffman and they were parents of all six children listed. Frederick William Holden was my wife's grandfather. Genealogical PROOF is now on file.
ROGERS: William ROGERS and his daughter Nancy of McMinn County, TN in the 1830-1870 time period. Anyone having information on ANY of the above lines, please contact me.
I would like to express my appreciation to all the wonderful people that have helped me break down some real "brick walls"! The generosity and unselfishness of most genealogists makes me feel very humble and appreciative.
Special Thanks to: The authors of "Our Jones Family", a well researched history of Aaron Jones of Virginia and Georgia, and his descendants. Edith Jones Breen and Francine Jones Allen spent nine years on the research. Anyone who uses the Jones data from my web page should reference the source as: "Our Jones Family" Compiled by Edith Jones Breen and Francine Jones Pendergrass, Published 1975. Much of the data shown in the Jones link on this web page is from their book. The data from Lazarus Rufus Jones though my family is my own.
- Donald Pope of Savanah Georgia for a wealth of information on the Jones and Kitchens lines.
- Jerry Mathews Palmer of Mississippi and Georgia for the exciting Mathews histories.
- John Holden of California for solving the "Three Abel's" Holden problem, and his generosity in sending the data.
- Douglas Hubbard of LaFayette AL for Jones and Kitchens data.
- Bobby Hardy and Carroll and Sybil Deschaines for the ORIGINAL biography of Henry Sanford Matthews that Rufus Jr. provide
