..."Ironically weather was mentioned in a special article marking a milestone for an "Over 80 Club" member - Frank C. Jones. Jones, on July 29, 1951, would celebrate his 86th birthday. He had been born in a log cabin a mile west of Monroe. As a young man, Jones came to Wayne Township and worked on a farm. In 1890 he married Miss Ruby Eastman. They then settled on her grandfather's farm which they bought and farmed until 1909. It was then the couple moved into the village of South Wayne. Smith presented the following in The Homestead of July 26, 1951: "He doesn't think the winters are bad now. He can remember back in 1889 and '91 that folks drove in to Wiota to vote in November and the snow was so deep that they drove right over the top of the stake and rider fences; and on April 16, 1891, they drove over the same snow and fence tops to vote again at the spring elections..."
