Notes for Epps Jones:
Lewis Jones writes in his manuscript:
Very little is known about the family of Epps Jones. We can identify only one sone with full proof and this is Epps L. Jones. Circumstantial evidence leads us to think that two other children may be identified. An analysis of the 1800, 1810, 1820 and 1830 Federal Census Records of Warren County, North Carolina yielded the following information concerning the Jones family:

1800 Census Warren County.. Epps Jones, 1male 26 to 45 years. 2 females under 16, 1 female from 16 to 26 , and 1 slave, a female.

1810 Census Warren County.. Epps Jones, 2 males under 10 years of age, 1 male from 10 to 16, 1 male from 10 to 16, 1 male from 26 to 45, 2 females under 10 years of age, 1 female 10 to 16, 1 female from 26 to 45, 1 slave, a female, 1 loom, 1100 yards of cloth.

1820 Census Warren County.. Epps Jones, 2 males under 10 years of age, 2 males 10 to 16, 1 male of 45 or older, 2 females from 10 to 16, 1 female 16 to 26, 1 female 26 to 45, 8 envolved in agriculture one engaged in manufacturing.

1830 Census Warren County.. Epps Jones, 2 males from 15 to 20, 1 male from 20 to 30, 1 male from 50 to 60, 1 female 30 to 40, 1 female 50 to 60.

From the above information one can surmise that the family was composed of four sons and four daughters. The eldest, a daughter was born about 1800 and the youngest, a son was born soon after 1820.

Epps L. Jones is the only son that we can identify by name and in the 1850 Federal Census of Franklin County Tennessee he is listed as being 38 years old and born in North Carolina. This would place his birth year as being 1811 or 1812 depending on the date that the Federal Census was recorded.

There are circumstances which indicate that Epps Jones died in the late 1830's. Epps Jones was actively pursuing garming as late as November 1825 when he purchased 10 barrels of corn, a heifer, and 10 bushels of wheat from the estate of John Falcone. Another transaction was dated July 14, 1827 between Epps Jones and Thomas J. Judkins when Epps sold 6 cows and calves, one feather bed and some funiture. It is determined that Epps failed to meet his obligations by the date agreed on and the property was taken by the said Judkins. The 1830 Federal Census lists both Epps and his wife as being between 50 and 60 years old. If we count the census as being correct for Epps age then he would be 55 years old in 1830 thus pointing to 1775 as his birth year and causing him to be 22 years old when he married in 1797. Polly Randolph was born September 3, 1773 and was 24 years of age when they married. Indications are that both Epps and Polly died in the late 1830's, however, no record of the disposal of their estate has been found. (end)
