Descendants of Robert Ramsey, Sr.

Generation No. 1

       1. Robert2 Ramsey, Sr. (George1) was born March 29, 1716 in Edinburgh Parish, Midlothian, Scotland, and died January 05, 1784 in Iredell County, North Carolina. He married Janet Gettys 1738 in Pennsylvania.

Notes for Robert Ramsey, Sr.:

1729. According to written legend, came to Potomac, Montgomery County, Maryland with his parents and 2 brothers. He would have been thirteen.

1738. Married Janet Gatis in Pennsylvania.

November 9, 1740. Robert's first child, James Ramsey, Sr., is born.

March 11, 1742/43. Second child William is born.

February 11, 1750/51. Fifth child Robert Ramsey, Jr. is born.

July 18, 1763. The John Hall and David Hall leases and releases are recorded. Witnessed by Francis Beatty.

October 10, 1766. Among the records of Centre Church, Mt. Mourne, North Carolina is the following:

"These are to certify that the bearer, Robert Ramsey, and his wife, Janet, hath lived within the bounds of this congregation these many years by past, during which time they have behaved themselves in a sober, Christian manner and have had the benefit of the church privileges; likewise his sons, James, William, David and John Ramsey, being young and single men, have behaved themselves soberly all their time, free from any irregularities or church censure, known to our session, and may be admitted to any society, wherever it may please God to direct them. Given at New London in Chester County, Pennsylvania Province, and subscribed, October 10, 1766.

                                                 Signed by order,

                                                        William Montgomery, Clerk"

I believe that the actual records are now in Raleigh or somewhere else, and not physically at the church. Another possibility is Salisbury. Robert would have been 50 at the time of this move.

March 12, 1767. Lease and release between Daniel and Prudence Alexander and James and Jane Wallace, all of Mecklenburg County, of the first part, and Robert Ramsey (Sr.) of Rowan County, for the 640 acres "on the south bank of Lambert's Creek," for 40 pounds. Witnessed by James Ramsey. Lambert's Creek runs westerly into the Catawba River, and its head is about eight miles north of Torrence's Tavern at Mount Mourne.

November 3, 1780. Robert Ramsey Sr. of Rowan executes a deed conveying 201 acres "next David Ramsey" to Robert Ramsey, Jr. of Rowan, for an apparently unstated consideration, witnessed by David Ramsey and James Willson. James Wilson's daughter Mary, born in 1763, married Andrew Ramsey, Sr.. He apparently cannot sign his name because the deed bears only his mark. Only he signs, so apparently Janet is dead by this date.

"Largest dry goods store [in Statesville] during the first half of the 20th Century was Ramsey's. It was founded by M. E. Ramsey, Sr., who had come to Statesville from the Mooresville section when he was elected register of deeds as a Populist in the fusion election of 1894. When he was defeated for a second term in 1896, he remained in Statesville, bought a defunct dry goods store and turned it into a department store. Much of the time there were partners. About 1900 it was Ramsey-Tomlin, and then it was Ramsey-Bowles, with John Bowles as partner. From 1911 until 1926, it was Ramsey-Bowles-Morrison, when Herbert Morrison came back to Statesville and was taken into partnership. In 1919, after Hotel Iredell was burned, C. S. Holland built a store for Ramsey's instead of a new hotel. Ramsey's kept a department store there until 1957, when it was discontinued and Woolworth's came to town and established a new store on the site."
