(LEONARD2, LEONHART (KEGEL)1) was born November 01, 1780 in Moore County, North Carolina, and died October 15, 1845 in Near Carthage, Jasper County, Missouri. He married (1) ELIZABETH SMITH 1802 in Moore County, North Carolina, daughter of DRURY SMITH and SARAH MOTLEY.She was born October 21, 1787 in South Carolina, and died August 06, 1866 in Near Carthage, Jasper County, Missouri. He married (2) LYDIA FULLBRIGHT Abt. 1835 in Georgia. She was born 1803 in North Carolina, and died Unknown in Franklin County, Arkansas.
Notes for LEONARD CAGLE, JR.:
Leonard and Elizabeth were from the area of Cabarrus/Stanley Counties of North Carolina to Warren/Allen Counties, Kentucky between 1800 and 1810.In the 1840's the family migrated to Jasper County, Missouri where Leonard soon died in 1845.By 1860, son Lindsey had moved across the county line into Lawrence County, where his family settled permanently. The following information is from the Family Bible of Leonard Cagle as furnished by a Robert Ernest Cagle of California. One of the sons, Linsey settled in Lawrence County, Missouri.Henry was in California in 1850 and 1860.Robert died as an infant.Edwin stayed in Jasper County, Missouri.David remained in Jasper County, Missouri.Benjamin who died in 1900 moved to Charlton County, Missouri.Willis moved to Saline County, Missouri.Rebecca 1817-1884 married John Logan Schooling on January 29, 1845 and their daughter Barthena Schooling married David C. Cagle who was born in 1843 (they were first cousins) and was the son of Lindsey Cagle, 1807-1843, on July 20, 1865.Information on this family is from Bible sent by Roberta Ernest Cagle of California to John G. Cagle of Arkansas. This per Nancy Jane Balmer at Cagle discussion group at www.genforum.com, July 31, 1998.We will pick up Leonard's story at this point, because as we will soon see, he was the direct ancestor of our Cagle's of the Cagle House Reunion of Prescott, Arkansas.Leonard was born in or near the year 1780, probably Moore, Montgomery or Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.By the year 1803, Leonard was married and living in Lincoln County, North Carolina, a short distance to the west of the town of Charlotte.By 1816, he had moved to Haywood County, near the town of Asheville, where he remained until the 1820's.At that time he moved to Georgia and was living in Henry County, outside of Atlanta, by the time of the 1830 Federal Census.By 1850, he had moved to Chatooga County, near the Alabama state line not far from Rome.
The following story is taken from the Civil War Centennial Edition of the Carthage, Missouri newspaper (THE PRESS):
"Some insight into events which transpired during the earliest days of the school [LaGrange] was noted Oct. 5, 1956, in a letter to The Press, by L. O. Cagle, Yucaipa, California, Cagle wrote:
"My paternal grandparents, Leonard and Elizabeth Cagle, came from Bowling Green, Kentucky, and settled on what is known as the Kellogg farm across Spring river from town in the year 1845. They had a large family, the youngest of whom, Willis, then 15 years of age, became an early day school teacher there and later became my father. "Most of the family went to Chariton county, Missouri, to escape the ravages of war. However, one son, David, was in service and another, Ed, who lived at Reeds, refused to leave.
The following information is from the Family Bible of Leonard Cagle as furnished by a Robert Ernest Cagle of California:
"One of the sons, Linsey settled in Lawrence County, Missouri. Henry was in California in 1850 and 1860. Robert died as an infant. Edwin stayed in Jasper County, Missouri. David remained in Jasper County, Missouri. Benjamin who died in 1900 moved to Charlton County, Missouri.
Henry moved to California and was enumerated in the US Federal Census of 1850 and 1860.

Notes for ELIZABETH SMITH:
Eliza Smith Cagle, 1787-1866, widow of Leonard Cagle, 1780-1845, appears here in her last census listing.Charles, Benjamin and Willis, all of whom married after 30 years of age, were her three youngest sons.Oldest son, Lindsey lived in adjoining Lawrence County, second son Henry lived in California, and middle sons Erwin and David were in Jasper County. The family of Elizabeth and Leonard moved to Missouri in the 1840's, from the Warren/Allen County region in Kentucky.Leonards father was probably John Cagle, Sr. 1740-1826 of Cabarrus County, North Carolina, who moved to Davidson County, Tennessee about 1800.An even earlier migrant to Jasper of old Barry County, Missouri was Jacob Cagle, 1770's-1836, the brother of Leonard, 1780-1845.The remnant of Jacob's family was still in Jasper County in 1850, then moved on to other states. One son of Jacob, Robert C. F. 1831-1915, later settled in Hickory County, Missouri.

Notes for SAMPSON CAGLE:
The 1810 Census of Warren County, Kentucky shows Sampson with one male 10-16 years of age, one female 10-16 years of age and another male 25 - 45 years of age, possibly another brother. It is unknown who these two children under 16 years of age are. Sampson's grave site has been located in the Cagle-Motley Cemetery near Hunt's Bend of the Barren River in Warren County, Kentucky, and contains five inscribed stones, plus about a dozen graves marked only with fieldstone. In the 1840s, Leonard moved to Jasper County, Missouri, but Sampson remained in Kentucky until his death. Sampson lived in Allen County which adjoins Warren County during a part of his time in Kentucky. The 1830 census of Warren County shows Sampson with one son and six daughters. The son's name is unknown. Two of the daughters, Susan and Frances, listed in the 1860 census were unmarried and are buried near their parents in the family cemetery on the Sampson Cagle home place near Hunt's Bend River in Warren County, Kentucky.

Notes for ROBERT CAGLE:
Robert who was present early in the Perry/Decatur County area of Tennessee, and who is believed, although not conclusively proven, to be the son of Leonard Cagle, 1730's-1800's. Robert, Simon and Paul, unlike the other known and presumed sons of Leonard Cagle and wife Susannah Richardson, are not known to appear in the county records in either Montgomery County, North Carolina or Clarke County, Georgia, where Leonard Cagle and sons lived during the late 1790's and early 1800's. Rather, Robert, Simon and Paul do not begin to appear in the records until the decade of the 1810's, by which time they were already located in western Tennessee.Robert Cagle first appears in Stewart County, Tennessee, during the era of 1810-15, and, after a single known appearance in Hickman County, Tennessee in the late 1817/18, is found in the records of Perry and Decatur Counties, Tennessee from the year 1820 until his death in the mid 1850's.Robert's two oldest sons, it is believed, were born in North Carolina in the 1805-09 era, after which he migrated to Tennessee and located for some five years in Stewart County. His appearances in the record books of Stewart County can be summarized as follows: 1810 through 1812, Tax lists; 1813-1814, Jury Duty; 1815 appointed as a part of a road crew; 1815, Jury Duty.During the time Robert was in Stewart County, Tennessee, his presumed brothers David, Charles, Henry, Simon and Paul Cagle were establishing residence in Hickman County, and Robert joined them there in 1817.Robert was not selected for jury duty in Stewart County in 1816 and may have already began his move to Hickman County, Tennessee where on March 25, 1817, Robert makes his only known appearance in the records of Hickman County, when he, along with Daniel Forsee, witnessed the sale of a slave by John Bird, Sr. to Valentine Flowers. In January 1818, Robert and Daniel Forsee also confirmed their signatures before the county court, and the deed was ordered to be recorded in Hickman County, Deed Book D, page 6. The chances seem to be good that Robert Cagle, at the time of the 1817 deed did not live within the boundaries of modern Hickman County, but in the western part of Hickman which was made into Perry County in 1818, for Robert was enumerated in the New County of Perry in the Federal Census of 1820:The listing for Robert Cagle shows him in the 45+ age bracket, but this may be an error, since the 1850 Census of Decatur County, Tennessee later lists Robert at age 67 in that year (born 1783). No females are listed in Robert's household in 1820, and it would appear his first wife (name unknown) had died, leaving him with three young sons, two of which were in the 10-16 age bracket and the third in the under 10 bracket. It is believed the three sons were Robert Cagle, Jr., 1805-1875, who later migrated to Stone County, Arkansas, Paul Cagle, born 1806-09 era and died after 1880, who later migrated to Attala County, Mississippi, and John David Cagle, born 1810's and died after 1880, who remained in and around the Perry/Decatur County, region of Tennessee.During the 1820's Robert, Sr. married Jemima (surname unknown), and had two additional children, Henry C. Cagle and Elizabeth Cagle.Near the time of the 1820 Census, Robert appeared in another document in Perry County, when he joined John Cagle, Paul Cagle and many other residents of Perry County in signing a petition of June 18, 1820 to the Tennessee House of Representatives, regarding the south boundary line of adjacent Humphreys County, as well as a need for a polling place for that part of Perry County which lay to the west of the Tennessee River.Robert bought land from Moses Christenbury on December 31, 1845, as recorded in Deed Book 1, page 8.He sold this land two years later to George M. Baber, as recorded in Deed Book 1, page 80.Robert appears a third time in Deed Book 1, page 173, when on December 18, 1848, he sold assorted livestock and household goods to his son, Henry C. Cagle, for $200.Robert lived in Stewart, Perry and Decatur Counties, Tennessee and appeared in the 1850 census of Decatur. In the early 1850's Robert Cagle, Sr. applied for a land grant in Decatur County, Tennessee. In the Decatur County, Tennessee Chancery Court Enrolling Docket, Volume 1 pages 98-99 states that on the first day of April 1856, there was granted by the State of Tennessee to Robert Cagle, Sr. 110 acres of land lying and being in Decatur County by Grant No 15380, i Range 8 Section 1.On December 10, 1868, Roger Gibson filed a complaint in Decatur County Tennessee Chancery Court Enrolling Docket, Vol. 1 pages 98-99 against Paul Cagle, a resident of the State of Mississippi and Robert Cagle, Jr, a resident of the State of Arkansas to force a sale of this property as one unit.In this complaint brought by Roger Gibson, husband of Elizabeth Cagle, the complainant states that after said Land was so Granted, the said Robert Cagle, Sr. died, leaving the Defendants Paul Cagle and Robert Cagle, Jr, David Cagle, Henry C. Cagle and Elizabeth Cagle, his only Children and Heirs at Law.Records show the land was divided five ways.David and Elizabeth sold their shares to Henry C. Cagle, giving him 3/5 of the land. Later, Henry C. Cagle sold this 3/5 share back to Roger Gibson, the husband of Elizabeth Cagle.

For a fifteen year period 1830 census to the time of the formation of Decatur County, in late 1845, no records exist for Robert Cagle 1783-1856 in Perry County, Tennessee. This is possibly due to the loss of records resulting from the court house fire, although it might also, be considered whether Robert was absent from the county during this period. During this period, however, his sons, Robert, Jr., Paul and David make a number of appearances in Hardeman and McNairy Counties, Tennessee, and in Arkansas and Mississippi. It might be noted, Robert is absent from the 1837 Tax List of Perry County, which is the only early tax list known to survive the fire for Perry County; however, Paul Cagle, Robert's brother is included on the list.Robert, in November 1846 made an entry for a land grant of 110 1/2 acres in Rang 8, Section 1, in the northern end of Decatur County. The tract was surveyed on Nov 26, 1846, and granted to on Jan 1, 1855, as Grant Number 15144, as recorded in Land Grant Book 19, page 985. It is unclear why two grants were issued for the same tract, unless Robert had made entries in both Perry and Decatur Counties. During the 1840s, during the time when Decatur was being created from the western end of Perry.Robert died shortly after the grant was made, either in late 1856 or in the early part of 1857, and each of his children inherited a 1/5 share of the grant. In a series of deeds and document, dating from 1857 through 1874, this property was eventually sold outside the family.

Census: 1850, Decatur County, Tennessee at age 67 years.
Notes for JEMIMA UNKNOWN:
Robert, Sr. who had been a widower at the time of the 1820 Perry County Census, had remarried during the 1820s to Jemima (surname unknown), who seems to have been a widow with children at the time of their marriage. It would appear that the two oldest daughters in Robert's household in 1830 Perry County, in the 10-15 and 15-20 age brackets, were Jemima's children by her previous marriage, and that the oldest son in the household, in the 10-15 age bracket, was David Cagle, born 1810s, the son of Robert, Sr., and his first wife. The two youngest children in the household, a son and daughter in the 5-10 age bracket, presumably were Henry C. Cagle and Elizabeth who were in their 20's at the time of the1850 census.
