The Michael & Ann Jones Home Page

Updated September 5, 2000

Our research has tended to avoid the more common names (you try researching Jones!).

We can trace back to James EVENDEN (born 1748 in East Farleigh, Kent); Ann DUNSTER (born 27 May 1750 in Linton, Kent); John SCUTTER (born 1754 in Cliddesden, Hampshire); John JULL (born 1700); James TOURNAY (born 1802, probably in Kent); through the wife of Richard SELLINGE (died 1468) to Sir Warren de BROCKULL (born about 1239); Robert ARMAN (born around 1850, Wiltshire) and George Aldred KING who drowned at sea (his children were Otho, Etta and then Aldred born in Peru in 1869).

We are keen to find out more about Ann MURRAY who was born 25 November 1873 in Tough, Aberdeen and Frances MURRAY(born 1842 in Birkenhead, Liverpool). Robert HOOD who died in Alberdalgie in 1902 intrigues us. He was gamekeeper and eventually valet to the 12th Earl of Kinnoul; his son was re-named George Drummond Hay HOOD, taking the Earl's family name - why?

Any additional information and possible links would be appreciated and we will gladly share data.

Family Photos

  • L A PHILPOTT (136 KB)
This is L A Philpott when he was elected Sheriff of Canterbury, Kent in 1917. We would like to know more about him, particulary how he is related to Ann Ameila Philpott who married Walter James Tournay.
  • James TOURNAY (105 KB)
James Tournay was born in Willesborough, Kent on 1 November 1824 and this photo was taken on his 81st birthday. He was the son of James Tournay the elder. On 17 October 1846 he married Ann Elizabeth Hammon at Hinxhill in Kent. We would like to learn more of her family.
  • Edmund DYE (101 KB)
Edmund Dye was born in about 1817. He was a wheelwright and blacksmith with a forge in Westerham, Kent. He also had an ironmongers shop, and that business was later continued by his son in law Edward Evenden and then his granddaughter, a well known local personality 'Vi' Evenden. The shop was at 17 Market Square in Westerham and bore the name 'E Evenden' until it sadly closed in about 1998.
  • John Samuel EVENDEN (189 KB)
John Samuel Evenden was born in Strood, Kent in 1818, marrying Sarah Coombs in 1884. They emigrated with their four sons John, Philip, Edward and Walter, together running Echo Ranch near McMinnville, Oregon USA. His son Edward returned to England in 1886 and married Edith Charlotte Dye.
  • George Drummond Hay HOOD (285 KB)
George was born 12 April 1870 in Aberdalgie, Scotland. The fact that his birth was re-registered as George Drummond Hay Hood raises the possibility that his natural father was George Hay Drummond, 12th Earl of Kinnoul. The Hood family moved away from Perthshire, and Dupplin Castle where 'father' Robert Hood had been valet to the 12th Earl and George became a Mersey river pilot.
