Sarah Adeline Kirkland lived on land within the Qualla Boundary of the Cherokee Boundary of the Cherokee Nation. Step son William (General) Kirkland was reported to speak fluent Cherokee. Sarah was forced off the reservation in deed disputed arising from William H. Thomas, the white Indian agent, later Cherokee chief, who did not properly record the transactions, and who sold land to whites, not Indians, on the reservation: US vs Wm. H. Thomas In equity, March 21, 1894 (Trespass on Indian Lands) #22. Now claimed and occupied by Sarah A. Kirkland, by deedbform J.W. Rogers and wife S.A. Kirkland, Oct. 2nd 1889 and not registered, also from William Kirkland and by deed Sept. 7, 18-- not registered, This land is part of land included in a 200 acre grant, issued to Thomas Jenkins. Felix birthdate confirmed through military record as being June 5, 1820. He was in the War with Mexico in Co.A, 1st Volunteers from April 5, 1847 to July 28, 1848 file #10561. He was mustered April 10, 1847 at Wilmington, NC under Capt. Tiptons Co. A 1st regiment. Discharged at Fort Monroe, VA. Special note in file "he was not borne on Rolls". (meaning there was question on ancestory being something other than anglo, otherwise why mention "borne on roll". From the Barker papers: Felix Hampton Kirkland War with Mexico, Co.
