Marriage Notes for Annie Maria Johnson and William George Johnson:
"Here is the real scoop on what Mother (Isabel Marie Johnson) said was how Annie Maria, son of Sam, and William George, son of Matt, met and married.
The railroads between Virginia and Washington DC and Baltimore were much used in the last half of the 19th Century. Well, at least the Johnson’s sure used them between Lexington, Staunton, and Baltimore!
Annie Maria, engaged to a young man (from Staunton, I think), was sent up to Baltimore where relatives here would oversee her acquisition of a trousseau.Cousin "Billy" (William George Johnson) was sent to the station to meet Annie Maria and bring her to whomever the Johnson’s were they would both be visiting there. According to Mother, right there at the station, Billy decided he was going to marry her and he did!Mother said that long after one of her Aunts (Ellen, as I remember) talked to the jilted fiancée and found he had never married. It was my sense on hearing this story that Billy and she had not seen a great deal of each other as children. Also, cousins married with great regularity in the north as well as the south. Franklin Delano and Eleanor were cousins.Appropriate possibilities for marriage are limited in large farm agrarian societies just as they were among royalty.
I have no idea who both were visiting in Baltimore, but several of the 1832 Johnson’s stayed in Maryland and established lines there. Grandmother’s sister Ellen married a Mr. Freeland who already had a family from his first wife. It is most likely that it was Ellen that Annie Maria (the 'I" in Maria is pronounced as "eye") and Billy stayed with in Baltimore. There are later tales of Ella going up to Baltimore and staying with Ellen."
The Johnson women were all very fashion conscious, as it is my observation were most "lace curtain Irish." like Rose Kennedy. (But the Johnson’s seemed to have Church of Ireland roots or Presbyterian roots, rather than Roman Catholic like the Kennedy's.)Mother said that in the Brandy House attic were stacked many years of back issues of Godey's Lady Book magazine right beside the Baltimore Sun stacks. Mother always managed to look like "Astor pet horse"-- 19th century slang for "elegant" -- whenever she chose to dress up. Aunt Mary --Darby's mother --and my mother made my "trousseau", including the dress I was married in"
