In several depositions which she gave concerning an application for an increase in the amount of her widow's pension (on account of her husband's service and wounding in the Civil War) the name is listed as Gaghgan or Gaghagan.
After some research, we believe it is likely that the name is a variet of the old Irish name Geoghegan or MacGeoghegan.
Bridget appears to have been illiterate (as she gave her "mark" as opposed to her signeture on documents of which we have copies) but, she may have known something of the correct spelling or pronunciation of her name due to the fact that the first "g" appears in the written versions of her name in these documents, even though this "g" appears to have been de-emphasized in typical pronunciation (or even silent). It seems to us that Bridget might have given an attempted spelling of her maiden name to both the priest who married her (unless the priest himself knew the background of the name) and the notary public who worked on her widow's deposition.
The name appears to be pronounced simply "GAY-ghen".
