Smith Beardsley enlisted on 05 November 1861 as a private at the age of 30. He served as a transfer from B company to K Company of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment of Ohio. He was given a disability dischard at Fort Scott, Kansas on 27 September 1862 He filed for invalid pension on 2/6/187? (appears to be a 4 or a 9) application # 266,397, certificate # 178, 65? ( appears to be a 4). His widow, Carrie E., app ied for death benefit on 30 April 1882, application # 548, 790; certificate # 337, 618 from the state of Ohio. As a young man, he was industrious, and taught school at the age of seventeen; this combined with other available work, enabled him to continue his studies. In seven years, he graduated from Alleghany College, with all his bills paid, excepting $150, borrowed from a bank, and this he soon paid.
He graduated in June, went to Chicago and worked for the Chutauqua Publishing Company, and also married, that year.
He later spent 38 years working for oil and gas companies, the lst thirty-seven years were for the Standard Oil of New Jersey, from which he retired June 30, 1934.

Beardsley, a Private of Company B. 21st Regiment, Ohio Infantry Volunters, was enrolled on the 22nd of Sept. 1861 at Nicholasville KY for 3 years and is reported on rolls of company from enrollment to April 1 of 1863. Special muster, present, March & April 1863-Absent, Sent to Hospital at Murfreesboro, Tennesee. April 28 1863-same to June 30, 1863. July & Aug 1863 present. September & October 1863-absent. Taken prisoner at Battle of Chicamauga, Georgia September 20, 1863. Same to February 28, 1865. March & April 1865- absent, sick at hospital in Columbus Ohio. Regiment was in action at Chicamauga, Georgia September 19, 20,21, 1863. Muster out roll April 21- 1865 at Columbus, Ohio
      Prisoner of war records show him captured at Chickamauga, Georgia September 20, 1863 and sent to Danville, Virginia December 12, 1863. Paroled at Aikens Landing, Virginia February 24, 1865. Reported at Camp ____, Virginia February 28, 1865 and then to Camp Chase, Ohio same day. Reported there March 4,5, 1865. Furloughed March 6, 1865 for 30 days. Returned April 10, 1865 and sent to Chief M. O., Columbus, Ohio April 21, 1865. His name does not appear on the records of Andersonville, GA or Danville, VA on file. No evidence of disabilitation on said records.
      Company morning report August 25, 1863 shows him returned to duty from hospital, Murfreesboro, TN. Couse of absence in Hospital April 28, 1863 and nature of sickness not stated.
