Came to America from Berne, Switzerland 1861, in a sailboat carrying 500 people. With Anna Sommer. It took them 6 weeks to cross the Atlantic and there were many trials during the trip. There was much excitement when a large whale was sighted, but the captain wouldn't let the men shoot it, for fear that it would capsize the small sailboat. Some of the people aboard ran short of food and one lady died during the trip. She was buried at sea, causing sharks to follow the boat for several days. Some days with a favorable wind, they sailed quite a distance, but other days when there was an unfavorable wind, the sails were lowered. Today some of the grandchildren have the trunks which carried the amily's possissions on the voyage.
John Juker Jr., who was born in June, 1860, in Switzerland, came on the sailboat with his parents. The family settled in Ohio as Anna Juker had a brother in Ohio who had been writing them and urging them to come to America. However, when they first arrived, they could not speak English. But, John found a Frenchman with whom he could communicate and the Frenchman found them a place to stay. A son, Frederick, was born in 1862 in Ohio and then the family moved to Indiana near Peru, where a daughter, Sarah, was born December 18, 1863. allen Alexander was born October 22, 1874 and Emma, the youngest of nine children, was born October 16, 1879 near Ft.Wayne, Indiana. Four other children of the family died. John Juker,Sr. worked in a stone quarry in Indiana.

In 1882 the family came to Custoer County, Nebraska, and homesteded south of Berwyn. They built a sod house and in later years a frame house was constructed.

In 1880 they were in Butler, Miami, Indiana
