He married MARTHA ANN CRAFTON August 13, 1863 in ST LOUIS MO, daughter of SILAS CRAFTON and CYNTHIA DAVIS. She was born June 27, 1839 in POPE ARK, and died Aft. 1910 in Independence Co. Ark.

Notes for MARTHA ANN CRAFTON:
There is a dispute as to the death date of Martha Crafton Herzig. Claudia Prince has a letter written by Tillman (Martha's twin brother) to his cousin Jerome Tillman in which he wrote that death had claimed "all, but sis and me" dated Dec 3, 1922. Note: from the scrapbook of James Carl Herzig her son, he states his mother became very ill from a heat stroke when he was 18 (1890) but "she lived several years longer)

Martha told her grandchildren she met their grandfather at a well and they had fallen in love at once. One of the grandchildren (Nellie Lesley Stout) recalled that Martha said Peter had dropped his glove as he rode away on his horse and that when he returned to reclaim his glove the romance was born. She also told that before they moved to Missouri, in Arkansas and the Civil War she lived with her twin Tillman and his wife Martha. It is retold that the men folk were away and some enemy soldiers were riding toward the house. Tillman's wife was expecting a baby and she and Martha put an axe behind a trunk and then they sat on the trunk while the soldiers helped themselves to the food and supplies. But the soldiers never bothered the women or the trunk where the expected baby's clothes were stored. The women didn't have to use the axe.

3. JULIA² HERZIG (PETER GEORGE¹) was born September 3, 1842 in MO, and died May 8, 1930 in Family Cemetery Ballwin MO. She married JOHN WILLIAM REINHARDT August 3, 1863 in St Louis MO. He was born September 1831 in Prussia, Germany.

Notes for JULIA HERZIG:
I had her death as June 17, 1866, but the 1880 and 1900 census for St. Louis has her still alive. 1900 states that she has been married 36 years with 7 children, 5 still living.
